In car starter tests:
Solenoid test 1 - use a jumper wire to connect from upper solenoid terminal to spade connector (ignition sw wire). Engine should turn over, and crank if switch is on, or just turn over if off. If solenoid is moving gear into engagement with flywheel but motor is not turning over, either solenoid internal contacts are bad, wiring batt + to starter is bad, or engine ground is bad, or batt is weak.
Solenoid test 2 - use jumper cable to connect from batt+ to lower solenoid terminal. Starter motor should spin, but motor will not turn over. If motor does not spin, check brushes. If starter spins, replace or repair solenoid.
You can do same tests out of car with jumper cables. + to upper solenoid connector, - to starter frame. This will test engine ground, too, if starter motor turns in this test but not in car.
There are two voltage/current paths to starter, one return to batt via grounds (engine ground cable to frame and batt - to frame). The main voltage/current path is the heavy cable from batt+ to solenoid upper terminal, then thru the solenoid internal contacts and then to the starter motor. The actuating path is from batt + thru neutral safety switch thru ign sw to solenoid spade connector. The main path carrys current to the motor windings, and the actuating path controls the main path by actuating the solenoid, which first engages the starter gear to the flywheel, then making the connection between the upper and lower solenoid terminals to connect juice to starter motor and spin it. It has to engage the gear first because it won't engage while spinning, and to try to do so eats the flywhell ring gear and the starter gear, like shifting without the clutch.
The solenoid uses a copper disk to bridge the inner ends of the two heavy connectors on the solenoid, connecting batt to starter motor.
