It's definitely frustrating. I haven't even had the truck a month yet. Paid $2000.

I jumped on AutoTempest to quickly search Ebay, Craigslist, AutoTrader, and a few other never-heard-of-em sites. Came up with only FOUR trucks listed (with pictures), none listed for more than $1500. It's gonna be tough.

I'm familiar with the title branding process. Went through it with both my Galants. If I let them total the truck and buy it back, I have to spend a couple hours at the DMV getting title branded salvage, then schedule a $50 Level III inspection at one of the limited DMV locations offering same, before going back to the DMV for another couple hours to get the salvage title re-branded salvage/restored. It's easily 3/4 of a day off work spent waiting in line and paying nickel-and-dime fees.

My plan is to calculate my hourly pay rate, multiply that number by a minimum of 5 hours for the above-mentioned bureaucratic shenanigans, add the fees for branding/re-issuing titles/registrations, and express how I will need at least that much in addition to the price I *just paid* for the truck less than a month ago if we're going to total it. Translation, I'm not totaling the truck for anything less than $2250 cash in my hand.

Of course, since I'm something of a gearhead, I'd happily take a check for $1500 if it means I don't have to deal with the DMV.

Seems like these battles tend to take about two months. I'm prepared to go the distance.

I'll keep everyone updated.
