I'd swap in the Montero Automatic and run the 2.4 (2.4's are wide block) look for an earlier Mighty max 2.4 so that it will have the 6 bolt crank (not sure on the exact years for the 6 bolt). I used a later Mighty Max 7 bolt 2.4, I had to buy the Pajero flexplate and adapter from mitsubishiparts.net i think it was under $250. You can get a more powerfull 2.4 from a Montero sport too, those should be 7 bolt too.
I'm doing a 2.3 swap into a '88 montero right now and although it's pretty cool i think if i had to buy a diesel and start a new swap it would be a 4M40.
