I'm currently in Brawley, CA on Work Travel... flew in to San Diego on monday and fly back to South Carolina tomorrow...
I find all the things in the Original Post funny, It's so true.
To get in on the credit card discussion... I too am forced to pay for everything and have the company reimburse me. It reeks havoc on my checking account and credit card which I have a low line of credit on, and although I have above average credit, excellent income, and low cost of living, and can get approved for financing on a brand new car tomorrow... I'm still not credit worthy enough to get an increase on my line of credit due to my student loans in repayment status (that are about equal to my salary for a year before taxes) I don't see the logic...
It's fairly competitive although they know I'm the guy for the job which is why I was sent out here on short notice. The bad is that I have to tie up 1-2k in funds each month on travel, and get a reimbursement on the 10th of every month. They have made exceptions for me in the past and done weekly reimbursements, but it's still terrible juggling funds around when they tell me friday at 4 PM I have to fly into Sandiego by noon the following monday.
It's now Thursday, ready to pack up and leave in the morning, and they are telling me it's best advised that I come back next monday to be here on site at this Hospital by 2 pm in the afternoon
I just realized I just maxed my credit card already this trip when I went to book travel for next week, and I have already killed my checking account!! Sheeeiit. I guess accounting will be leaving me an expense check on my desk tomorrow if they plan on sending me back out.
It's straight obsurd, but I took this Promotion in order to bump my salary up so I can afford this Economy and pay my student loans. In the past I didn't mind being broke as long as all the bills are paid and I'm putting all the extra money toward my principle balances... but I hate this.
The good thing is these trips are great for my career, but I just hate juggling expenses. Sometimes I have a huge lump sum in my checking account just to end up spending it and waiting on a reimbursement check at the end of the month... and my boss keeps telling me to put more money in my 401k.
OK done ranting... that being said. I do love traveling for work which is about 25%. I'm just glad I've graduated to flying everywhere for the most part instead of driving my wheels off like I had to do in College.
