If its just a couple of teeth off I doubt you did valve train damage, but thats a half a$$ educated guess on my part. Get the front torn all the way down and check it and let us know. Also check the crank angle sensor (like Fasteddy said) and also its blade that triggers it. If the PO made a mistake the blade can come loose or if the sensore wires are not routed right the timing belt can rub through the portion of the harness that goes to the sensor. also check to make sure the hydraulic belt tensioner and related bearings are good to go.
