Thanks for the post. The gears mesh, the dist turns free no binding at all. The old head was a #2 this one is a #1.
I know, not the best choice. but it will do till I can do a 3.1/3.4 swap. I bought the head for cheap. It came with all the papers, had been rebuilt eleven years ago and sat on a shelf at a garage. I did replace the valve stem seals since it was built so long ago.

I had lightly lubed the O-ring with grease and this morning with spray lube. Now the gap is about 1/16". Maybe it's a slight casting difference between a #1 and #2.

For now I'm going with it.
