I spent about 3 hours on it today and gave up for now..... with thoughts of sending it on to the crusher.
First, I removed the valve cover and unbolted the exhaust manifold - no problems. Then I started stripping the front of the engine..... got as far as removing the crankshaft pulley bolt and found 4 more bolts that apparently are threaded into the crankshaft timing belt sprocket. The problem I found in removing those bolts are that the heads don't have enough clearance to the pulley hub to get a socket on them. Consulting the Haynes manual, it looks like that pulley "hub" should instead be a washer under the bolt, but no amount of banging, prying, cussing and coaxing would get it to turn loose - if that's what it really is. It makes sense that it's a washer, but if so, it's rusted tight to the pulley.
So, I moved on to the intake manifold and found out how nuts I was to think that this itty-bitty head would come off easily. That Mikuni setup is designed by a sadist for a masochist to work on while beating himself over the back with chains.
I don't mind carburetors at all, but there's NO way I have ANY interest in owning a truck with that sort of nonsensical vacuum hose maze.
I've heard about the Webers used on the 2.6L engines - anything simple for the 2.0L?..... like maybe a Holley or Rochester?
If I'm going to keep it, I don't want any vacuum lines other than the brake booster, purge canister and maybe a distributor advance..... and speaking of distributors, would a pre-'89 distributor be a simpler choice?
