OK, this is what I found out so far, not so helpful yet, but here goes. my intent with doing this is to find exactly what models had the 4.90 gear sets that we are putting in the gen II monteros with the locker. I ordered mine brand new, the part numbers that I know work are:

MR 124860 and MR 124858 for front and rear

BUT

I am sure these gears are sitting in part yards across the US somewhere, just need be smart on what models they came in from the factory. I was thinking that the Sport 01-04 with the 3.5L engine would have them. So I asked one of my parts guys this question:

If I had a 2001 Montero Sport, it had the 3.5L engine, a rear locking

He came back with this:

The part number for the 4.90 ratio gearset for that model is
> MR286348

Now either this part number is the same and is just different because it supercedes the previous one that I know works, or these 4.90 gears are not the same as the 4.90 gears we would need to put in a gen II montero.

Can anyone help verify what models and trim levels the 4.90 gears came in that fit into the gen II and gen II.5 monteros? just trying to help my brother get the gear sets cheaper than buying brand new from a dealer. Also, if Mitsu ever put them in a sport with a factory locker that would bolt right up to the gen II montero, that would be an extreme bonus.

I thought all this was true, until I started looking into it further, now I need some more help.
