Thanks for the quick reply. One of the reasons I commented on the quality of the forum here is that I did a search and already determined that it was a non interference engine from other user's posts.

I'd say there's a pretty good chance the belt is it. Only thing that steers me away from that possibility is the owner's claim that it tries to start. It should be pretty easy to determine if that's the problem just by cranking it. If that's not it, what's the next most likely culprit - assuming it has fuel, spark, and timing?

FWIW I'm a pretty good wrench and diagnostician - been working on both gas & diesel engines and rigs for 35+ years. What I'm mainly looking for here is info on problems specific to this vehicle that could cause the symptoms the owner described.
