The a/t makes life so easy offroad that I forget about doing it m/t, and I can see some merit in an m/t wheeler. I tend to wheelstand the fronts up onto ledges instead of driving up them. In low range the swb turbo could completely unload the front tires and get about 4" of air if you did the brakeoff/throttle slap just right. ... This multiplies the lsd effect and gives some fake lsd action on the front. I guess if I had lockers, I'd do it different, but the above gets me over most any ledge that the breakover, approach, and departure angles allow, so far, anyway. I don't rock surf if I can help it.
One other thought. I used to have a set of 3 way locking hubs on the LC FJ55. They had "lock", "auto", and "free" settings. Lock and free worked just like Aisin and Superwinch manual hubs. Auto position worked just like mitsu stock autohubs. Would this help with a locker steering locked, or would the hubs stay locked until you backed up. IIRC, in auto, you just shifted out of 4wd and you were in pure 2whl again. Sure do miss those hubs, and yes, I've looked the world over. They were Stewart Warner hubs and that company has changed hands 4 times since they were built, and in any case, they were made by a company in SA (Brazil/Argentina-ish) who was bought by who was bought by who was bought by. Everything always changes...
THAT is a technique that I've not tried. 'Course, with no turbo or supercharger I have enough power to just maybe unload the springs. Maybe.
I am familiar with the LSD trick, though. Used that more then a couple dozen times before I put the ARB in my Mitsu axle. Works pretty good!
I don't think the 'auto' hubs would help. If they work like Toy or Ford, anyway. I know there are a couple sets where you actually have to back up to unlock the hub once it's out of 4WD. I found a resource for that info a couple weeks ago at a shop and now I can't remember WHICH shop.
Typically, if I'm in a spot where I want one hub unlocked I jockying around to get a hub to 'auto' unlock isn't possible. I've had problems with other hubs where you have to back up like 10' before they unlock AND you have to have the steering wheel straight. (old stupid Jeep thing)
Yea, been there. About how I feel with the Mitsu transmission and t-case at this point.
