Here's my old plenum. The actuator is spring loaded & forces the butterflys into the open position when the actuator is not actuating them (logical huh?).




I personally feel that it makes sense to keep the butterflys functional if you can afford the replacement cost of the lower plenum. The Mitsubishi engineers did too good of a job on this vehicle to discount the variable intake as unnecessary. Others have eliminated the variable intake & stated that they feel no difference in power when measured by butt dyno. I'm guessing that before & after trips to a real dyno would show that there are some losses in both the horsepower & torque curves-maybe not huge losses across the entire curve, but losses nonetheless.
