These pictures should show how much care is needed to align an exhaust manifold. There can be (and is in this one) a lot of slop in the bolt pattern that can cause port misalignment and reduce performance. The next 2 pictures show clock movement and the relationship of the gasket to the exhaust ports on the passenger side manifold:
The next two show fore/aft movement:
It's usually best to center the manifold fore/aft and use the lower flange ears as a "feeler" height guide:
After tracing, the pattern looks like this - it's all centered, yet way off and will need quite a bit of grinding:
On installation, the manifold will be centered fore/aft, but lifted a little to expose the step and center the exhaust port on the gasket.
