'91 montero rear prop shaft output seal question and u-joints
      #992214 - 04/13/07 07:28 AM

Took my old seal out to replace while doing u-joints. crossed it over to a SKF seal. The new seal is about 1/2 the thickness of the old. The old appears to have two seal contact areas. The new one just looks like a good ole oil seal.

Tapped the new one in place and going to give it a try. Anyone experience this?

On the u-joints.....Ive tried the vise method of pressing out the x member..man o man.....Have not budged the one I spent time on. Going to have to set it up on the press when I can get a helper to hold the shaft with me. Thoughts??

Yes, I had a shop replace the tailshaft bushing and the seal. As you noted, the seal is about 1/2 thickness of the OE version. The seal blew out.... I put in another and it blew out also. I don't know if the aftermarket bushing had anything to do with it, but the bushing design was different and did not have the same oil return holes as the OE bushing.... it may have allowed pressure buildup. In the end I installed a new tailhousing (integral bushing) and an OE seal.... back to normal.

With the OE bushing, the thinner seal may work just fine, but keep a close eye on it. The thicker flange area on the OE seal provides a more secure bore fit and doesn't allow the seal to wobble.

I prefer the factory seal there, I made my own bushing. It has performed flawlessly.
Is there anything overhead to hang the shaft with a nylon strap to help you with the presswork?

Nylon strap...great idea!

Bushing?? I see no bushing inside my extension. I shine a lite up there I see a bearing race that holds round bearings up about where the extendios bolts to the case. There is a weird looking circlip style piece inside the extension with a half moon area. Looks like a sprung piece inside the extension.

Yoke where the seal rides looks NEW....smooth....no groves, no sign od wear or riding inside a bushing. Couls I have some kind of new and improved setup??

If you do not feel excessive side play with the shaft in the extension then I would just get a good seal to install.

There are retainer clips inside the bore at the ends of the cross that you have to remove to press out the cross - if you haven't removed them, clean the cross bore and you'll find them.

IIRC, the OE seal has a dust lip and an oil seal lip - like a crank seal.

Frank,

Where did you find a replacement bushing. Iswapped my tailshaft butthesecond one was worn too.

I can't go any faster than 55 right now or it vibrates.

Clay -

I had a driveline judder and vibration a year or so ago... went through replacing u-joints, rebalanced the drive shaft and several other attempted remedies, including pulling the rear differential and adjusting it. Since replacing the transmission I don't have the issue, so I now think the problem was in the transmission - maybe loose center support bolts or a bad clutch assembly... haven't yet opened up the old transmission to see if I could find a problem.

During the search for a remedy, I took the truck to an independent transmission shop. They removed the old bushing (with the tailhousing on the truck) and installed a replacement that they *thought* would work. I think it was for a Volvo tailhousing. After blowing 2 non OE seals, I replaced the entire tailhousing. That's when I saw how different the bushing design was between the replacement and the OE unit.

If you want to try a bushing replacement, I think it's important to get the exact bushing. I recently found the web page below - they might be able to help:

Omega Machine and Tool, Inc.

I have the best luck whamming the bearing cups with a socket and a BGH, yoke on a wooden block. Seems to break them loose better, and I've never bent a yoke that way, and I have bent them in a vise. I spade drill a 1" hole in the block so the opp. side cup has somewhere to be driven to.
