...well, not legally anyway.
I have obtained insurance, but I'm still working through my electrical issues. The trouble for me is I don't have a garage, and this cold weather means I either pay someone to do work I can do myself, or I wait. So, I've been waiting.
All my investigation points to a possible bad alternator. On Monday, I have booked a garage to pull the alt for me and I will be taking it in to get rebuilt. The electrical shop knew their stuff and is confident that they will have all the parts it might need. Possibly the 4D56 unit is similar to a Landcruiser unit which also has a built-in vacuum pump.
Remember all the blown fuses I had? I also found that the fuse on the rear of the factory tape deck (now replaced) was slightly melted, but not blown. It had not been working right since I got the vehicle. So now I'm quite worried about future electrical gremlins popping up. Hope all solenoids and relays are undamaged.
Oil leak is fixed, it was just a loose oil filter! Barely hand tight.
Starting in below 0C has been very rough, leading me to suspect that getting in on Brewmaster's glow plug group buy was a very good idea indeed! I'll hopefully have those installed in the next few days and will report back.

Alternator got pulled today, 1.5 hours labour for the garage. I dropped it off at Amperage Technology in Calgary. The ran the numbers printed on it through their system and nothing came up, so I'll have to wait until they test it and open it up. Should have a report on it tomorrow.
Also picked up my glow plugs from Brewmaster (Thanks!) and what I hope are the right bulbs for the dash. Pajero should be fully sorted soon if I'm lucky.

OK, so the shop I've taken the Paj to caught the non-DOT headlamps. Curiously, the signals are all SAE and fine. So I need to source a pair of 92-96? Montero headlamps and hope that they fit the Pajero.
Anyone know if the SWB headlight assembly will swap over?

Ed, we did some comparisons when I first got mine (one of the Monty guys was wondering) and they looked totally different behind the lights - I don't think they'd swap over without a lot of fooling around, and sourcing parts from overseas to finish - You should be able to find Montero headlights from a genII stateside at a wrecker, or even ebay?
Yes its a drag that they caught it, but its better to do it now and get it over with, then be given a deadline for compliance by an officer on the side of the road someday, yes? Also shows that your inspection facility is following the guidelines minutely, which is also not a bad thing, IMHO.
As far as I could tell, everything else is in proper spec, in terms of glass, and other lights. Us shorty guys have an advantage there, since we can just pull the whole headlight, and swap in an el-cheap sealed beam, or find a VW shop and get a RHD approved H4 (that's what I did).
How did everything else check out? And hows about the alternator?

Yep, I'm not upset that they caught it. So far the only other thing they have found is the tailpipe is split and needs to be replaced. Still need to do the road test and check the ball joints on the other hoist, and it has to be running for that, of course.
Funny thing is the shop is asking me for a brake rotor thickness specification. Any chance someone with an FSM can sent me that page? Should have the alternator tomorrow, or at least a report on it's condition.
Needless to say this is costing me way more time and money than I had thought! I enjoy it though, at least the stuff I can do myself.

Since the 91 Montero (genI) uses the same front pads as us, I would venture to guess the brake disc is the same? I'll check my books when I get home from school if no-one else has found it by then?

Thanks Phil. I bought a manual CD on eBay that came with an EGR plate, just in case (hey, it was $1.99) but the CD folders are corrupted. Did get a few useful files off it though. I have WinCaps and am figuring that out now.
Alternator verdict: Regulator is toast! And....they are having trouble finding the replacement part. The Mitsu part # does not appear in any of the resources they have. I told them to try looking at the Dodge D50 to compare, who knows. They are thinking that eventually they will be able to find one based on specifications.
More delays.....

So Phil, are you saying a 91 Montero's headlight will fit a 91 Pajero? I am thinking I will have to replace mine as well.

No, a 92 Montero is the same as a 91 Pajero. (AFAIK) The Gen2 body was a year late getting to the US.

Absolutely not. I said front PADS as in brake pads.
Now, having said that, a 91 Monteros headlights will fit a 91 Pajero SHORTWHEELBASE, but only because both use a standard 6" round bulb, H6024 I think? But this is available at any parts store. Or you can get H4s from a specialty shop.
The Longwheelbase on the other hand has fancy schmancy flush lights on the genIIs, (91+ Pajero, and 92+ Montero)
