cherry red exhaust manifold!
      #955000 - 01/02/07 12:31 PM

A while back I was too cheap to replace my exhaust manifold gasket so i had put on some sealant and after that my manifold started getting cherry red after some use. I went and bought a new gasket at the dealership ASAP and installed it. The manifold is still getting cherry red. (iot get red right around the O2 sensor area not near the head) at this point I replaced the timing chain / head gasket(coolant had been leaking down the side of the block for a while) I can't seem to figure out why it is getting red. The cat is not clogged, I am going to pull the plugs tomorrow and check them bu they were fine when I did the head. any other ideas? I am also going to check 02 sensor voltage and see if it is running lean.

Check your timing and adjust your valves.

Sounds like your catalytic converter is plugged...I'd check that again.

alright...that's 2 people saying "timing". I'm curious, I've never heard of timing making the exhaust that hot...how is that happening?

The timing was dead on after the timing chain and I just re-adjusted the valves, still red hot. It is definitly not the cat, I went ahead and gutted it ( bad I know, a new one will be in soon ) and it still does it. how would I go about checking the advance in the distributor. with the check connector?

had the same problem. my tps was way out along with the air flow meter had holes in the resistor strip. also the o rings on my injectors were leaking along with some other gaskets in the intake. if you spay were the gaskets met with like starting fluid you will hear the engine rpms bump up if there is a leak. cheak out 4crawler's web page he has some very usefull write ups to cheak all that stuff.

I check the TPS while I had the manifold off and it tested fine, i'll check the AFM and gaskets too.

Here's my understanding: If the timming isn't advanced, the spark is late on the compression-fire-exhaust stroke. A late burn (fire-if you will) actually exits the exhaust port as it's valve opens to vacate the burnt gasses from the cylinder. You've got fire going into the manifold. Red Hot too.
On my 1980 driver, the inner distributor was all gunked up, practically frozen. When I did tear it down and cleaned, lubed, & reassymbled, it still was AFU because of a broke vacume diaphram on it. I surmize it failed first, the advance mechanism just sat there and went froze with gunk, and the heat was on! I discovered it broke by suckin' on the vacume hookup and watching the inner distributor plate not moving (pulled or advanced).
Now my only experience is on 1980's. Yours might be different and someone else here is sure to help ya out.

P.S.:Don't drive it like it is now. You would be asking for dammage.

>>>*Overheated exhaust manifold, common causes:

1. Late ignition timing, either initial or failing to advance as engine speed increases.

2. Intake air leak, lean mixture.

3. Late cam (valve timing)

4. Exhaust air leak, (air being sucking into the exhaust stream) normally combined with a rich mixture. Cracked exhaust manifold, *Often on the back side and not visible without removal (Use a dentist's mirror?)

5. Base tuning settings, sensor error?

6. Plugged Cat, restricted exhaust.

That's the common ones...*EB
