Gotta hand it to LandRaider...
      #945476 - 12/03/06 10:59 PM

And I had to see it for myself:

In case you all are wondering what the hell I'm talking about ^ that is a NP231 transfer case mated up to a KM148 auto transmission. AFAIK, LandRaider was the first to claim the two were a bolt-up.

From behind:

This particular t-case has a slip yoke eliminator already installed. Here's a shot to give an idea of the overall length, referenced from the front mating surface:

Here's a pic of the gap that's present:

This particular t-case came from a 2001 Wrangler. Therefor the input should be the "long" style. I didn't have the proper tools to measure the spline engagement, but it appeared to me that the input shaft was bottoming out when slid onto the output of the transmission. I had to remove the seal for the transmission output to allow for this since the input shaft on the original t-case must have been a much smaller OD.

Swapping input shafts on the t-case might be a viable option, but then again a t-case clocking ring would probably be just as effective.

BTW, sorry for the crappy pics. They were taken with a cell phone.

LandRaider, this one is for you!

Very cool!!!

And the NP231 is 2.72:1, and there's a 4:1 gear swap available for it!

Keep going!

And with the SYE, it's a good couple inches shorter. Which I think would be very welcome an a SWB rig.

AND there is no front slip yoke which would be awesome for a SAS.

thanks for the kind words.... now we just need to figure out which seal to use. I hope someone will actually use this. so this is one more thing the whiners about "no mods available" can quit ***** about. the mods for our trucks have been developed on the backs of US, and were the reason. to our community.

Plus you could bolt a 700r4 into a raider with a stock transfer case. hello junkyard advanced adapters. :) thanks factory engineers

This is just awesome!

Any ideas about the Gen2? It would probably kill the Active trac system, but does it bolt up as well?

I wonder if I could use the stocker in my swap so I can keep the handle on the passenger side for now...

Maybe I'll check it out. I don't have the trannies here. Does anyone know how the length of the 700 compares to the Mitsu manual? I wonder if I could get away with not modifying the trans crossmember this way.

Lots of thoughts, little to no answers...

That's actually what I'm working on right now. I'm in the middle of collecting parts. Once I have them all lined up, then I will pull the SR into the garage and drop the stock t-case and see what happens.

It's not as simple on the Gen2's because it seems to require more parts...

BUT at this stage it looks very possible.

Give me at least a few more weeks and I should have an answer to this one.

Yes, on a LWB. It just won't fly on a SWB. BUT this still opens up a lot of doors for single reduction t-cases. Since my Gen2 has some more wheelbase, I'm gunning for a dual t-case setup... that should be shorter than the stock active-trac t-case!

Dude, you had this coming for a loooooooong time. I just wish someone would try to FI a 2.6 based on my junkyard findings.

Yes, I think this would work with a Gen1. However, it looks like this will not be the case with the Gen2.

Give me a little time and I'll have more answers for the Gen2's. I don't want to pass on speculation and theory as fact until I physically have the t-case mated up.

Nathan,

This should be easy on a Gen II SR. The transmission in these are the same as the Jeep Cherokee AW4. Take a look at the AW4 when trying to match up splines and input shafts. If nothing else, swap the complete AW4/NP231 (or even an NP242 if you want full time 4HI) into your SR. The bell housing should bolt up.
