Hey all this is my first forum post.My name is Dave and im 16 and love '79-'88 toyotas.i know alot bout vehicles for my age.ok ive got an '83 yota 2 WHEEL DRIVE(but i baja'd the fenders,stiffen the torshen bars and put 31's on it)and its a standard cab 22r 4-speed base model key and a heater and a rubber mat.it runs good but it could run better in the topend.now ive heard all bout the 20r heads going on a 22r block but no one has ever explained it to me what i have to do to the block and pistons.ne help would be appreciated.l8er

hello there, i was 16 when i bought my first toy pickup so i can relate.
right away, i can tell your engine is probably tired. the biggest boost in performance is a rebuild. however, you do seem to know a little about the 20R head, so i'll chime in on that.
the 20R head is a bolt on fit for any '81-84 model 22R. all that's necessary to install it is to unbolt your old head, and plop the 20R head on. you'll have to use the 20R intake and whatever carb will work on that(20R stock, weber, 22R carb with adapter). your exhaust manifold will bolt right up.
to get the most bang for the buck out of that, i'd recommend installing a new camshaft and some oversized valves, as well as having some port work done to the head. engnbldr sells all the head parts you need, and any decent machine shop should have no problem installing them.

Dave you might want to search for terms "hybrid" or "20r" on these forums - if not google itself.
The 20r does flow better. It has a slightly smaller combustion chamber, if I recall correctly - so it will slightly raise your compress. If you go to a 20r head, you'll need a new intake manifold. Best bet would be to use 20r head, engnbldr (www.engnbldr.com) oversize staineless valves, a good header, and a weber carb. Nothing needs to be done to your bottom end.

1) Try the SEARCH feature or GOOGLE, there's plenty of info on this. 2) Yiu must use an early 84 or older 22r engine, the 20R head won't bolt up to a late 84 or later block.

Hey Dave! Welcome to the board,...............WOW, 16 huh? I've got t-shirts that are older than you, so as long as you don't use too much of that abbrieviated text, we will get along really well. You can't go wrong with a Toyota truck as your first ride, since they don't go fast enough to get you into any trouble, and they don't cost the earth to fix. Good choice, and Happy Driving!

Here are a few tips:
Your 1983 is a correct year for this conversion, normally the 20R head is used on the 1981 to 1984 11.280" tall deck block. Since the 20R head is the same thickness as the 81-84 22r head it is easy to do.
Later 1985 to 1995 shorter deck block designs become a bit problematic to convert but cash overcomes everything.
The combustion chamber of the 20R is very close to the 22R in size so you don't mess up the compression ratio and can still buy fuel for her.
The real benefit to the 20R head is anyone can port one, let's face it, the ports are round. Just keep them round but go larger and equally, porting really helps this type head since stock they are tiny. The valves are too small also so larger helps.
Another benefit that confuses a lot of folks is the 20R head does not have the vortex or swirl ledge under the intake valve head. On the 22R and RE heads that begins to act as a wall at higher speeds, the factory uses that to increase velocity and swirl at lower speeds which is part of why the 22R design has such nice low RPM torque.
So the smaller 20R ports have nice low end velocity and that head has more RPM capability.
So the combination bolts up with the use of the early manifolds and can be made to perform nicely. Done properly, it is a nice cheap performance option....*EB
