Shogun Smoking
      #921247 - 09/12/06 04:02 PM

Have just fitted a new timing chain, guide, tensioner lever and tensioner to a 4M41 3.2 fitted to a 2002 Shogun with 49K on the clock,I don't know what happened that the tensioner and lever were so badly damaged that I had to take off the front timing cover to replace the chain and the damaged tension lever but I suspect that the engine was turned anti clock, everything went together fine as I had it clean and am used to diesels, started up fine, quite and none of the racket it was making before so the guy I done it for went away happy,no smoke at this point,he came back after a couple of days and it is belching out black smoke on rev up,I rechecked all the multi plugs on the pump, checked all the air trunking and filter but to no avail, went through the procedure of resetting the pump adjustment again,ie stop it,disconnect the battery, reconnect the battery, warm it up and let it idle for 10mins,no joy,the injection pump timing gears were not removed,it idles as sweet as new, anyone have any idea what might be wrong,Mitsi has a two week wait to put it on the computer.

Stuck injector(s) maybe? I'd try running some veggie oil through it to see if the smoking goes away.

No thanks I won't be running it on veggie oil, the injectors are not the problem, this vehicle is more or less drive by wire, no mechanical controls at all attached to the pump, it is all electronic control, the pump is Zexel, the pump was not removed or the timing gears taken out of mesh, what I did have to do in order to remove the timing cover was remove the battery, AC pump, sound suppression around the pump to gain access to remove the bolts that go in from the pump side to hold the PS pump, while doing that the electrical system was without power, I followed the instructions in the handbook to reset the system when the battery was reconnected but to no avail, the vehicles is now back on the road running clear and full power but the plug going on to the EGR valve has to be left off, what I was hoping for by posting here was someone that has experience of the electronics of this vehicle to make a suggestion, its a 20002 Shogun 3.2 diesel with the 4M41 engine 49K miles.
Thanks
Jim

Had it hooked to the computer at the dealers,it turned out to be an oxygen sensor that was sending the wrong information to the EGR valve which was starving the engine of clean air,it was taking in too much of the exhaust, thanks to everyone that replied, without the diagnostic equipment one cannot do much with the modern vehicle and especially Mitsubishi with the price of the parts, one has to be sure they are needed.

Do your client a favour and blank off the EGR!

Glad you sorted it out.
