Change motor mounts without an engine lift (EDIT- done)
      #918038 - 08/31/06 03:43 PM

So who has done it. Both of mine are completely dead. Basically the engine is held in by the transmission just laying on top of the rubber motor mounts. I guess it would be very easy with a lift, I dont have one. So, can you do it without a lift?

You could remove your skids and use 3/4 plywood and a bottle jack on the pan. It's not safe

I'd like to know as well for my 92 3.0. It has exhaust shields and motor mount shields but I can't even see if mine are cracked, as has been stated as a common problem on the Montero. Is it possible to pull the mount shields to look? There is one accessable nut/bolt, it seems, holding the mount shields. Maybe jacking at the crank pulley? Not sure if that risks damage.

Floor jack works fine its how i changed mine out i put a board to spread the weight over the pan and all went well.

Would a short section of 2x8 work better since it would have less "potential" to flex/bend than a sheet of plywood?

I'm not sure, maybe some flex would be better. The 2x8 is flat, the pan may not be, so the actual contact of the 2x8 may be on a smaller area than a flexed 3/4 ply??? Ok, so what about my idea to use the crank pulley as a jacking point?

I dont have the heat shields on the exaust or mounts. They were not there when I bought the truck.

I wouldn't try that - danger of slipping as well as damage.

If you have the material to make one, an A-frame and hoist would be best.... as mentioned, careful jacking on a 2x8 across the pan should work... some of the weight will be supported on the rear mount.

Engine lifts are not that common here.

Jack and plywood are industry standard tools for changing engine mounts. Not exactly the best way, but it works (most of the time).

Hmm, you're all making we want to go home and check mine! When do you experience vibration with a cracked motor mount (idle, driving, all the time)? I'm only asking because I noticed a slightly rough idle (just a little) yesterday. I thought my injectors might be dirty and so I put some of that Lucas injector cleaner in this morning, we'll see...
