Im building my own 2+ car shop, And Im seriously considering a mechanics pit in the floor. I have a few questions for anyone with experiance with using a mechanics pit. I have searched the internet, and I cant believe that I cand find any info or comments. I must not be doing something right.
Is it worth it, do you have one? do you use it?
Dimensions? is 4'deep x 8'long x 4' wide?
Put it to one side in just one bay? or center it in the middle of the garage for lots of room to move around?
Any help is appreciated.

Personally my experience with them isnt worth it..yeah its nice to be able to go under the vehicle to work on it but only minor things can be done...you cant do any tranny swaps or major things like that because you would have to fight to get it back up the stairs.. I say for what its going to cost you to do the pit you can get a good lift..that way you can do everything under the car standing....includine tranny swaps..it actually doubles your bay because if you got one on the lift and need that bay for something...you raise it up , lock it and then you can pull one under it to work on...also you dont give up the floor space for when you need to roll around under a vehicle....just my 2 cents...

I've thought about a mechanics bay, but given how much vehicle lifts have come down in price, if I were redoing my garage, I'd go with a whole vehicle lift.
Always been concerned that I'd get tired of navigating around a big hole in the floor... and thought that a whole vehicle lift might be less of an obstacle..
You could raise the lift and drive under it, or have the floor space pretty much available when not in use.

A third on a lift-- doesn't cost that much extra to take your walls up a few more feet either. Friend of mine has 14 ft walls; lift uprights are secured to the floor; this is seismic zone 3 here in Interior Alaska.
The hole in the floor also increases your liability for some idjit (including self injury).

A good example of why we ask that people not cross-post. The originator posted this here as well as in the Isuzu Talk Forum, but never came back here. He decided to go with a lift.

Wrong again!!!
In spite of what the web god says I have read every one of the replies the day they were made, and appreciated all comments.
I get e-mails containing reply's of all my favorite subjects. I dont even have to visit the site to read them all. Isn't that cool??
