v6 rear axle compared to 4cyl rear axle
      #875066 - 04/15/06 04:57 AM

My friend wrecked his 4runner was thinking about taking the rear end putting perch's on it and putting it in place of the 4cyl axle...
What do you guys think about this

Q?
would I use the perportioning valve off my truck or the v6...
Other than that its wider...dont know if this is a plus...and 10" drums instead of the 8" stopping power is always nice
and the third member is more beefy but they are both 8"'s
was researching gears and the only gears are oem toyota's
What do you guys think?

I think that's a good idea....the housing is also stronger...the old u-bolts probably won't make it around the housing. The drums are more like 12.5" dia I think.

I just did this same thing to my '85 4 runner, using a rear axle from a'89 V6 truck. The brakes are 11.5 and the axle is 3 inches wider. The rear section of your e-brake will have to come from the donor truck along with the load proportioning rod.

Sounds like you are using a 90-95 4Runner axle?

If so another issue is that the backing plates and e-brake cables are different from the trucks or a first gen 4Runner with two seperate cables running down the lower links to each backing plate.

If you have all of the parts off of the 4Runner you can make it work but it still leaves you with the e-brake cables running down your leaf springs.

My axle came off an '89 runner and everything seems the same except the cables are shorter and will not reach each wheel. I have to order the rear sextion of the e-brake cable to make it work on my '85 runner.

I am assuming from the red highlighted portion above that he is using a 90-95 4Runner axle which has a totally different e-brake cable system and backing plates due to the coil sprung 5 link in the back.

If the assumption is correct the swap has some different issues than you would have had using a 89 4Runner axle that came with leaf springs.

I thought that the poster would like to hear about some possible issues rather than "I did it with a different year axle than yours into a different year of rig than yours and it worked good"

Yes it is from a 90 runner with the 5 link set up..and coils
I was even thinking of putting the 5 link under my truck with extended arms and bigger coils but would rather keep it leaf springs there is a spring swap i saw looks pretty simple from
http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/56leaf/index.html
he didnt have much issues but he is a 4 runner..
ebrake- is it posslibe to run the cables other wise right now i dont have any ebrake parts on my truck because of interference...dont know e-brake is a nice thing to have but not essential to me

backing plates?
