Difference between 22R and 22RE heads.
      #864778 - 03/21/06 10:27 AM

New to fourm. Could someone here tell me what the difference is between a 22R and 22RE head.

What does it typically cost in your area for a rebuild on a head? Surfacing only?

Trying to get a handle on this for my son's 1987 pickup.

Thanks,

Reproman

>>>*Well, the 22R (carb) and the 22RE (EFI) actually share years. The head differences are 81-84, 83cc open chamber and a thicker casting, the 85 and up are 53cc closed chamber, thinner design for use with the 96 link chain and flattop pistons. The latter feature a pear shaped exhaust port, probably the easiest "at a glance" way to identify.

There is the turbo head mixed in there, identical with the late head except for the 63cc chamber. The combustion chamber on the turbo head is four shrouds, it isn't a full round chamber.

*Costs vary widely around the country now, locally about $125/150 for a valve job and surface. Resurface only is $35 in our shop...*EB

my local machine shop does good work and charges $80 for a 4 cylinder valve job, and $35 for a resurface. just a ballpark figure

To add, if the head still has the cam/rocker assembly on it, the 22R carbie will have a 'wheel' (correct term escapes me at the moment) that the fuel pump flipper rides on. The 22RE has a spacer in its place, along with a block plate for where a fuel pump would go. If it's got a 'wheel', no biggee, it can sit in there and spin if going into an EFI'd rig.

Nice info if just picking up a head from someone who just wants to get rid of a head for a quick ID.

Head work up here is now running about $250. A head shim is extra if it's needed.

Check to make sure the exhaust manifold isn't warped; might need a resurface. $40.

Welcome to the board! We have a couple factory service manuals sticky'd at the top here; also visit our Toyota section via the link up in the header.
