      #827303 - 12/27/05 09:55 PM

My 1994 grand cherokee I just got it a month ago and its really mint, but I tried to shift it into 4 wheel and the book says pull to right and pull back while doing about 30mph .it wont move could it be rusted, the thing was sitting for months without use, I had the rear brakes done and inspected ,everthing works except the throttle linkage some times is hard to push down on the gas but always returns ok and there is 3 cables , throttle tranny and one extra cable ,what is that for?.please help me out, with the 4 wheel shift and cable, Thanks

I don't know much about Grand Cherokee's, but would like to help. It would be nice to know what transfer case you have in your cream-puff. Selec trac, or command trac? What did the manual call it? I suggest the next time you're in the GC, shift the transmission into the neutral position while at a dead stop, and then attempt to shift from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive. When you shift from 4 wheel drive high to 4 wheel drive low, do it at a dead stop, shift transmission into neutral, and then move the transfer case shifter slightly to the right and then down. You should be able to shift from 2WDH to 4WDH, and back to 2WDH at normal highway speeds (or, "on-the-fly"). In theory, you should be able to shift from 4WDH to 4WDL between 3-5 mph, but I always stop, shift to neutral, and then shift from 4WDH to 4WDL, or 4WDL to 4WDH. I'm just guessing from your post that you have a command trac transfer case, but it really isn't that much different in shifting if you do have the select trac.

this happened to my cj, I used the t case all the time......then retired it for about 6 months....the shifter froze up . I had to gently wrap on the input shafts with a hammer and that freed it up.
Of coures I did have to pull it from the jeep :P

Sweety have you KICKED the $hit out of it? A gentle pull prolly ain't gonna geterdone! Knock it around a while, it might just come loose by itself. I have run into several that have not been flexed in a few years. A few have needed redneck persuasion.

You start at the shifting lever. The input shafts are what sticks into the tranny and are connected to the shiftilg lever with rods..
Get someone to sit in the jeep and shake violently the shifting lever while YOU are under there.. Look to see what is shakeing and where the shakeing stops..(what is it that is not moving) there is what is frozen.
You WILL get your hands dirty!
