4.0 vs. 4.2 Jeep Motor??
      #793702 - 10/11/05 07:13 PM

I'm building a 4.0 92 jeep motor to put in my 85 Wagoneer that has a 4.2. Do they use the same Distributor or will they interchange? I hope so i wanted to put a GM 250 HEI Distributor in the 4.0 for more fire.

Use the 4.2 stock dist and save your money! The hei only puts out the exact amount of spark that the factory dist does! It does not have the needed curve. Mine is on my bench and I have no use for it at all.
You see, spark is deceided by NEED.. What the hei CAN do is make a spark under more compression than the stock dist.. But all thngs being equal they both spark the needed amount at the same time.

But all i need to know is. Do they use the same Distributor or will they interchange on the 1992 4.0 and the 1985 4.2?

Can I put the 4.2 Distributor in the 4.0 jeep motor?

I'm not sunder or Bigjim, but i believe the oil pump drives are different if you want to take my word for it.

The computer for the 4.0 does the work of the vacuun advance on the 4.2 dist... You will need that! Check the bottom shaft of the 2 dists to see if they are the same.. If so go ahead and install the 4.2 in the 4.0 engine.
Without the vac advance you will need the computer to operate the engine.

The only thing in the 4.0's dist is the cam position sensor. No pick up electronics or anything.

yeah i don't have any of the computer stuff on my 4.0 it was burned up in the fire but i hoped the 4.2 would fit in a 4.0 motor. just hoped someone knew if the 4.0 late and the 4.2 had the same oil pump location and if they had same diam. hole in the block. if so it should fit.
I'm going to put the 92's 4.0 HO the 92's 4 speed auto Transmission and the 92's full manual transfer-case so i get fairly good fuel mileage out of a 1985 Wagoneer with 3.31 gears and overdrive.
