alright, i have searched high and low trying to sort out the stereo in my 95 4runner. i know i have 6 factory speakers (two 4" in the front dash, two unknown size in the rear quarters, and 2 unknown size above the rear tailgate). there appears to be some sort of crossover in the rear, but i have no idea how it's set up.
many searches here, elsewhere on the internet, and in all my manuals have turned up nothing. i'm looking to replace all the speakers, but before i go tearing apart the entire truck, i'd like to know whats going on back there.
this has mostly been prompted by a very strange problem. all 6 speakers work when i turn on my alpine headunit in "cd" mode. i lose the 2 in the rear quarters when i switch to "radio" and they don't come back until i turn the deck off and back on in "cd". i don't see how this is an alpine problem. hopefully when the weather cooperates i'll go exploring w/ a multimeter.

the rear speakers have their own amps that are part of the speakers. They will only come on when the amp wire is hooked up. try a search on here, you should find something. Or try dr. installs

Try crutchfield.com Go to "What Fits My Car?", go through the vehicle selector and it gives you a list of your speaker sizes.

Can't help you on the rear speakers or the ones above the rear hatch as I don't have those in my '91.
However if you plan on going with a 6.5" for the fronts, this may be of help.
The pods will allow you to run a very deep speaker in the front door. I find with just the two door speakers and the rear sub, that is all I need to fill the whole rig with sound. No need for rear speakers.
Even with the sub turned off, the two 6.5" ones up front are loud and fill the whole inside with sound.
I still have the stock 4" speakers in the dash, and one day I'll convert those over for the CB radio, and get rid of my present CB speaker on the back of my console.

crutchfield is pretty useless. they list a 4"T for the front as a direct replacement and 6.5" for the rear panels with some modifications. no mention of the two tweeters above the tailgate.
i just pulled out my wiring diagram manual, now i'm very confused. so many wires and connectors. maybe i'll just learn to live w/ only high notes coming from the rear when in radio mode. i was hoping maybe someone on here has replaced their rear speakers, but it looks like most of you don't even have them.

No good ideas on this other than telling you stuff that you already know.
The fronts are 4" like you said, I am adding some 6 and 3/4" Fosgates in custom boxes over break and no idea on the rear tweets.
On a side note, I do not have sound from the rear with my current deck at all. One speaker is covered by my storage box, the other is toast. No tweets either, the BB monkies must have buggered it up.
Where are these crossovers that you mention?
What about the internal amp?
I can think of no plausible rhyme or reason to why you would have it in one mode and not the other, that makes no sense.

Well, sorry the info didn't help. I never even heard of a Runner with tweeters above the tailgate. When all else fails Call a toyota dealer parts department and ask.
I scrapped my whole stock system and went with Alpine components in the front door panels and R-type sub in the back. I also have a set of 6X9s in the rear quarter panels. [ March 11, 2003, 06:02 PM: Message edited by: sherri_girl ]

my wiring diagram actually calls them "squakers". apparently my year 4runner either came with a 2-speaker or 6-speaker setup. i have long since yanked out the old cassette deck and factory amp.
all the stereo guys seem to own 96+ 4runners, oh well. [ March 11, 2003, 07:28 PM: Message edited by: James Timberlake ]

Ok here is what I found out installing an aftermarket in my 91. The rear side panels have 5" speakers with a small amp attached or near them driving them. If you bought a connecter so you did not have to cut the factory wiring in the dash during the install of your aftermarket head unit, the amps on the rear speakers will not be switched on. If you look at the connecter closely, you will notice that a wire on the factory dash side has no mate on the radio side. This is the wire that sends a 12v signal to the rear amps. Jump the wire on the head unit that is supposed to trigger an automatic antenna when you power on the unit and the back side speakers should work. This is not the best situation, however, because you are sending the head unit amplified signal out to the small amps on the back speakers and re-amplifying it. This may distort easily because the incoming signal is too "hot". The best situation would be to:
A. open up the side panels and dissconnect the amps on the speakers and drive them with the head unit output or an external amp. You could use the factory speaker wiring then or install some heavy gauge or B. send a line level (RCA Jacks) signal from the head unit out to the rear speakers. This would take a little soldering or some adapters, and you would still have to use that 12v "trigger" wire intended for the antenna to power on the factory amps. I have never seen the above the window tweeters you speak of in a 4runner, but mine does have some grille work in that area that looks like a speaker could be behind them. My guess is, if they exist, they are just wired off the rear side panel speaker, passing through a heavy cap on the way. Hope this helps and let us know what you find out in there!
