FSM no help with A/C install
      #753466 - 07/12/05 10:11 PM

Still on this A/C kick (hopelessly trying to install it is perhaps more accurate). So I just installed my cooling unit under the glove compartment but I cannot find anything this thing could plug into. Here are the connectors:

Does anyone know where this thing plugs into? The connector on the far left and top are from the unit. The one by my index finger is from the harness. My FSM tells me nothing about hooking this up. I thought this would just be plug and play....

OK, so in all fairness to the FSM it does include a A/C system circuit diagram, but that is a royal PIA to follow. Does anyone know offhand if I am missing part of a harness or something? For example, I have no idea what plugs into the cooling unit A/C amplifier....Please help!

T . I've only installed several AC units and only on 85's and 86's w/22re's. Everything was always plug and play but since its been a while since I put one in I don't remember if ther is an additional factory add - on splice about a foot long in the area (behind the glove box) you mention. The only difference betwwen Ac and non ac vehicles in the cab I believe is the additional AC button on the heater console and the center (of 3) sections on the heater-AC - blower unit.

My suggestion to you is to go to your local Toy parts and have them bring up the wiring harnesses for your year and model with and without AC. That should show you if something is missing and perhaps have to order.

Where did you get the AC parts? If from a donor vehicle go back and grab the wires or at least take a look at how it was installed.

Personal oppinion is to instal a condensor of a 4runner since it is larger and thus more efficient . Spend the money it takes on a NEW , clean dryer . And , I dont know why but he compressor on the 4rnnr is different than the truck but I believe they mount and plug in the same. Probably moves (and possibly holds )a little more r-12.

.............Just went thru previuos posts and looks like to me you already have a 4-runnr condensor. The dryer mounts to the right of the lefthand headlight.

Also , If you have a crbed truck its a good idea to add the factory idle up dash pot on the carb and the vsv on the right hand fender well. Oh, and by the way , did you grab the low idle kick off the compressor electronic box that sits on top of the evaporator ? Thats anothe r plug.

Will help more later if I can. Hope this was some

Cactus azz cholltero.

Thanks a ton for your reply Cholltero. I got my hardware from a guy in CA. Got myself a brand new dryer with the system too. I got a pretty good deal, but he could have been a little better with his shipping practices. This of course means I have nothing to turn to in order to see how this install works though. Plus, there are a major lack of early toys around here for example (most are rusted into the ground sadly).

If you take a look at my posting from a couple days ago, you can see what my condensor looks like. My dealer can not find anything that looks like what I have - even for the forerunner. Therefore cannot find any parts I need for that - still don't know what I'm going to do about that one either. I was hoping someone would chime in with some parts they would be willing to salvage or sell to me, but so far no one has.

I've got some more pics of other questions I'll post after this one. I sincerely appreciate any help or advice anyone has.

OK, so here are the other parts I am totally naive about. This first item (circled) came with the parts, but I am not sure where all of it hooks up too. I've reviewed some pics of other engines and have put some of it together, but some of the vacuum hose locations are still beyond me.

This second part (vsv?) I also got with the kit. It has this plug that I cannot find anything to plug into. The other plastic plug looks to plug into the compressor - finally something I can find a mate for!

VSV and the A/C idle up valve:

Some of the other connectors look like perhaps the low pressure switch and the A/C amplifier that are both behind the glove box:

Thanks for your reply Roger. I didn't realize it, but I must have mooched a pic of your engine bay sometime back - that was what I was following. At least I know it is a good example. I hope you don't mind me asking a couple more questions:

Why do you have one tube of the Idle-up valve blocked off? Is this something I should do?

I know you have the other hose from the Idle-up going to the throttle body, but what do I do with the hose that leads to near the power steering pump currently connected there?

And finally, my vsv looks just like yours. I even have the first plastic connector that you have "vsv" written on. There are two more plactice connectors that come out from that one. One goes to the Compressor right? Where does the other four prong connector go to though? Is that yet another harness I am missing?

Thanks so much for everyone's help.

The blocked ports are where my power steerig udle up switch used to connect to. New p/s pump with no VSV on it so plugged the ports. If you have p/s, hook up the VSV on the pump to the idle up valve and to an intake vacuum port.
