Hi, I was wondering if anyone had done this. I was looking to build an adapter plate so that I could throw a air filter on my 87 4runner. The only problem is, the entrance into the MAF is about 2 in. by 2 in.
The real question is, is htere a way to modify/or buy a new MAF that has a bigger intake hole
or
does any company make intake for a 1987 4runner. The lowest year I have seen is for an 1988 4runner.
Thanks -Ben

A guy on this list, with the screen name "Mosk", would probably know the answer. I know that turbo Supra enthusiasts look for a certain Lexus AFM/MAF. I don't know what good it would do to have a larger MAF when you will still have a small throttle body. Now if you were pulling air through that thing with a turbo it might be a different matter. -- Matt

Go to local junkyard and ask for a 1982 supra AFM, the number on top should be 22250-43110. The next step is to go to hardware store plumbing section and get a 2" to 3" rubber adapter coupling. Now remove intake hose from airbox, remove electrical connector to AFM, remove the 3 or 4 bolts and pull out the entire airbox. Remove the little adapter on end of intake hose and put on new 2" to 3" adapter. Take your cone filter (K&N universal cone filter part #2430) slide it onto the supra AFM and tighten hose clamp. Slide the supra AFM into the 3" adapter and tighten hose clamp. Plug in the electrical connector and your good to go.

D-runner is correct...but I would add that the stock AFM is fine for almost all normally aspirated motors. Based on my own experience with my turbo truck, I feel the stock AFM, which is the same size ob both turbo and non-turbo vehicles, is good to 180 hp or so. If you switch to a larger AFM you will have a lot of compensating to do, and it can be almost impossible to tune.
I have some more info on my site:

Good luck,
