Ok, so I'm gonna try and electric fan again. I've spent a lot of time and money on them in the past and ended up back with a mechanical fan because of overheating. Well, the 3800 doesn't really work well with a mechanical fan:

So, everyone gets all warm and fuzzy talking about the Taurus fan so I'm giving it a shot. I don't like the stock shroud though. I want something that fits the radiator to maximise the fan's potential. So, I'm bending up a new shroud to fit the fan to the rad, and I'm running a DCcontrol e-fan controller to power it. The controller really *isn't* that expensive compared to rounding up the high-power relays, wiring and t-stat control for a standard on/off relay setup.
For the shroud, start with a drawing:

Flatten it:

Cut it out, find some steel straight edges and start whacking with a rubber mallet until it looks something like this:

Then I cut the stock Taurus fan shroud up to get just the mounting ring for the fan:

Slip it into the hole in the new shroud:

And then just pop-rivited it from the outside using small pieces cut from 3/4" aluminum angle:

More to come...

Dan, your attention to detail just makes me sick. I'd go nuts before I got that detailed. But here's to your work. Looks good.

Wouldn't you have to get OUT of camp under your own power first?

Better yet, make it OUT of his garage/driveway and TO Moab.
Pathetic...
BTW Dan, nice work as always... Let us know how it works out...

I know I'm not the most mechanicly inclined person on this board. Not even in the top numbers. But even I see the problem.
The fan goes in the FRONT, behind the grill. (I don't see how you even closed the hood.) The fan also works much better when you connect a belt to it.
Feel free to let me know if you need any more help.

By Sweater's post, I'd have to say that it's Randii. But again, I haven't met most of the people on this board in real life.

That's me. Generally, you'll find me nursing a darker brew, but I was working with what was easily available...

Wayne, you got it all wrong. The fan is S'POSED to be up there, stationary, to catch all the air coming in and get it spinning real fast (Helps to better atomize the O2 particles.). Kindof like one of those Tornado Brand gas mileage miracles.
Really though, thats some really clean work. The fact that you actually hammered dents INTO something, instead of OUT OF, in order to make it look nicer, is a testament to your fabrication skills. Good show. -J
