I recently bought a couple parts from ebay hoping for the best... I bought a EXS 3" cone intake and I installed that with no problems and it was running great. My next installation was one of those "20+hp mod chip-easy installation" type deals and the instructions I got looked like a photocopy of a photocopy that I couldnt read that wasnt 4Runner specific...that should have been my big hint. Well, I contacted the seller and he told me just to plug the little resister into the power and ground connectors on the intake sensor plug. I did just that (into the red and black wires) and when I started her up, the check engine light came on and it wouldnt rev past 1500 RPMS without sputtering bad. I took out the little "chip" and put the sensor back on and I have had the same problem since then. I have tried unhooking the battery to try and reset the computer but nothing has worked, the check engine light still comes on and I can't even drive down the street now. I was wondering if any of you got scammed by this stupid part and know how to fix it without blowing a load at the Toyota dealers. That is all the information I can think of to offer but if you have more questions about the setup, just ask. By the way, it is a '92 4Runner with the 3.0 Auto with only 85K miles, aside from this problem, it has consistently run great. Thanks so much for the help, I shouldnt have been such an idiot but I guess I am learning my lesson the hard way.

well, i'm not sure about why its running that way..you probably fried somthing by adding that little resistor...and if what you bought was that resistor, then boy, you got ripped of...you could have bought that same thing at an automotive store, or hardware store for like 50 cents...sorry,to kinda flame on you right off, but, ya....

We regularly get questions about the "magic 20hp resistors" being sold on ebay.. and this thread shows quite clearly what a scam they are..
So I've made this thread a sticky to appear at the top of the forum to help others steer clear of these things..
The only other idea I can think of is getting a can of electrical contact cleaner similar to as shown below and clean the pins in the connectors you pulled apart.
Is there any possibility that you "sprung" the pins in the connectors when you plugged the "resistor" in and they are not making contact when you plug the mass air flow unit back in?
If resetting the computer and cleaning and reconnecting the mass airflow unit doesn't bring it back.. kind of sounds like you have damaged the main engine control unit...

Well, I dont think the connectors have been sprung, they dont seem to have been bent at all really. I think I will try to get some contact cleaner stuff (should I be able to get that stuff at HomeDepot or somewhere like that?) and use that but I am not sure that will work. I have a feeling that my air flow sensor is fried, but I am going to take it in to a little local garage shop to see if they can reset the codes (what is a good price for getting those reset?). Well, thanks for the help and hopefully I can get this all figured out without going broke. I just recieved a phone number for the seller from ebay after sending him a "nice" email, hopefully he knows at least something about what I should do.

A friend of mine fell for that "chip" mod last year, he ended up pulling some of the connectors off during the process and impairing his Mass Air Flow sensor...you might have to cut the silcone around the top of the mass air flow sensor to see if any wires came undone, which will require some soldering, slap the MAF lid back on and apply some more silicone and hope it works out..

Well, I dont have many tools up here at college or the confidence to rip into my sensor...I am going to take it into a local garage around here tomorrow probably but I was wondering if you guys have tips on how not to get ripped...like how much should I get charged for simply running diagnostics? Anyways, thanks for the help.

PepBoys here in GA will run the codes for FREE. If not maybe some other similar place will do the same (autozone, ect..)

Those "eBay" 20hp chip is nothing but a resistor you can get at Radio Chack. They are basically charging you $20.00 for a 5 cent part. It's a poor man mod of fooling the ECU into see less air than what is going through the MAS.

now, im curious about those little box add-om thingy's. like those "power boxes" and "juice boxes"...
my dad put one of those on his 97 f-150...4.2L six, 5speed...he had a good 1500lbs in the bed of that truck...then we put that "box" thing on between the IAT sensor and wherever those wires go...the ecu im guessing...well, he said it made a world of difference!! he said it almost felt as if he had only 1/4 of that load in there...so, in thinking, i wonder if it might work that well on the 3.0?
has anybody out there already bought one of the "power box" things? not the resistors...
