I've been helping a buddy build a P'up, d44s front and rear, all sping over, shortend wheelbase(was a long bed), section and bob bed, spools fr/rr, 5.89 gears, full hydro steering and 36 inch TSLs. We took it to Tellico this past week and it did pretty go except the gearing is still not low enough.
Heres the whole story. The truck is a 1985 Isusu P'up with 4 cyl diesel. It was a 2wd truck. About 5 years ago the trans went bad and the only tranny they could find to go back in it came out of a 4x4 Chevy Luv 4spd. So they put it in along with the Luv t-case but it was still just a two wheel drive truck. They drove it that way for about a year and then just parked it. We pulled it out about 6 weeks ago and built what it is today. We are real proud of the little 4cyl diesel but evan with the 5.89 gears it still is not low enough.
So the question is, is there another trans and tcase that we can put in it to lower the final drive ratio? It is a manuel now but he would not mind putting in an automatic. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
Here are some distant photos of the P'up http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=5361460#post5361460

Welcome -- I'm no tranny expert on the Diesel side, but I know we have a few folks here who are.
That sounds like a cool pickup project!

HI YJ , the trooper trans is virtuallly identical to the one you have, 84-85 trooper with the 4 spd had a 3.72 first gear same as the 80-85 luv and the 80-85 isuzu pickup , 86 they went to all 5spd in 4wd and the first 4 gears were for the most part the same ratio, all the low range gears in all the years show to be 1.80 in low range transfer, giving you an effective low gear ratio of about 6.70 to one , i do show a listing of a 4spd trans that had a 4.12 first gear setup but it was for European use only and not for the u.s.your best bet will prob, end up going to a double trans fercase setup , with your t/case setup it would not be as difficult as you may think , as the front drive assy just unbolts from the side of the t/case., lock it in low range make a small block off plate and hang the new style t/case from an automatic on the back end with a small adapter plate , you won,t loose any oil capacity at all and the rear output shaft spline is the same as the input spline on the late transfercases. Rob Gorrel did one by using the late tr/cases but had to do a lot of welding .no other trans will bolt to your eng with common available(?????) parts your trans is called an msg4t the newer trans the all aluminum mua can be fitted but it is a very expensive way to go and you don,t have the flexability of the t/case that you have with yours , and by the way that 4spd is just about indestructable, the 5 spd is not anywhere near as stought hope this helps some Jerry

IF the transfer case is the same as the 88 and up Troopers, then Tera has a lower ratio kit for the tranny.

This is what Tera has http://www.teraflex.biz/graphics/low307_175.jpg
This is the closest application I see, but I'm not sure its the right one, LOW307
Fits 1987*-1992 All models. Transfer case uses a rear, slip-yoke style driveshaft.
*Call for details before ordering.

Contact JLEMOND (above). He was a factory guru for years.
And yes, I did mean to say transfer case.

HI JIM no the transfer cases are completely diff, his is a cast iron unit with a removeable side assy, that drives the frt wheels , but the output shaft is the same as the input in the later t/cases that is about the only thing that is common Jerry
