About Uaz portal axles. The price in Russia around $350 + shipping $300.

Is this the same vehicle as the WAZ (the way we pronounced it) that is the common military vehicle in Russia? The craftmanship wasn't great on any of those trucks - didn't have to worry much about it being stolen. I used to ride around in one in Uzbekistan. It came in two colors - midnight blue (gray) or olive drab. It was 4-wheel drive all the time but most folks removed the front drive shaft to save gas. There is are a lot of scams there - be careful. It will take a generation for corruption to be reduced.

No, the WAZ produce passenger cars. I think about those axles because my brother in Ukraine can ship them here. He is owner of small air-cargo company. He is owner of UAZ 469 also. When I will be ready for SAS may be will try to get a pair of UAZ portal axles. They are strong enough for Trooper. I read a lot of good reviews about them on Russian and Finland 4x4 sites.

Pete,
stop right there.
UAZ haz nothing to do with VAZ (not WAZ).
They are two totaly different beasts.
UAZ is a body on frame, solid front & rear axles (with portals optional), leaf sprung, part time 4x4 with weered manual locking front hubs.

While VAZ (or LADA NIVA, TAIGA, etc) is a unibody, IFS, full time 4x4 with lever activated lock in the t-case, no hubs in the front (CV shafts are permamently engaged).
And it's also impossible to disconnect the front drive shaft on the VAZ, because the t-case is actualy sorta divorced from the tranny (it's connected via viscouse coupling). If you try to drive it with the front shaft disconnected you get vibrations above 20km/h (roughly 13-14mph). My dad had one of the first LADAs for 10 years, so i know it in & out.

Vova, while i agree UAZ portals are pretty strong for what they are, but they will not handle the abuse from the Trooper 3.5L.

V shope gde ya rabotaju, odin is moix koleg provel 30 let tha avtobaze v Ukraine. Ya rassprosil ego ob etix mostax eshje kogda ti upomenul o nix v pervij raz. On skazal 4to pomenjal i peredelal boljshe portalov na UAZax chem obiknovennix razov v 20.

Just don't want you spending $1200-$1300 on the axles to get them here & be dissapointed in the end.
