IFS gear box adjustment
      #650331 - 12/30/04 12:40 AM

ok, I've heard there is a a adjusting nut/screw ontop of the IFS gear box to take some play out of the steering wheel. Mine has play in it and i have all new SAS steering parts... i found the play coming from the gear box. I think i remember reading that you can losen the lock nut and turn the sloted stud (screw) up to i think 1/4 turn and then lock it back down. has anyone ever heard of this adjustment??? B/c i did find this nut/screw on the gear box. How does this work?

Discussed briefly on this web page:

http://128.83.80.200/taco/box.html

I cranked mine down as far as it would go. Screw sets the bearing preload on the sector shaft. It helped somewhat.

That is the same I do mine. I just re-sealed my box and that is the way I will do it. To do it the right way (FSM) you need an SST and an inch pound torque wrench.

If it made it harder to steer, you overtightened it.

Just did it a few weeks ago, so here's a quick down & dirty...
Spray with penetrant (PB Blaster or the like), wait a day or two ( ), jack up the rig, mark where everything is starting from, loosen the retaining nut, tighten the adjusting screw just until the play goes out of the steering wheel; "shouldn't" be more than 1/4 of a turn(helps to have someone else in the cab wiggling the wheel back & forth; they'll feel the play go away while you tighten), re-mark where the screw is set to, tighten the retaining nut while keeping the adjusting screw in place.

how did i overtighten it? didnt 4 crawler say he tightened his all the way? i even went back and loosened it and if i loosen it any more there is too much play. not a major amount but i like my steering pretty tight and i dont like to have much understeer. anyone know how to check and see if i have enough fluid in it? it has atf not power steering fluid in it right? thanks

I think you need to find a compromise between too much play and too tight. On my box, I went fully tight on the screw, it helped the play a bit and did not get any tighter. But I think the box was worn out or had other problems, so I got a rebuilt one in there now. How you adjust your box depends on how loose it is and how much adjustment is left in it. Be sure to get that nut back on tight, or you will find a very messy ATF leak out the top, BTDT. I use a socket with a long wobble extension to access it after removing the coolant overflow bottle.
