I want to get a winch for my 95 grand, but I don't want to have to get one of those big clunky aftermarket bumper winch mount setups, so I was thinking of getting a front hitch receiver and have a winch mounted on the plate so I can just put it on when I go wheeling since this is my daily driver. So has anyone seen or done anything like this and will the hitch fit allright under there? I know they sell one for it, I just wonder about it with the unibody and all. Any input would help.

Years ago bumpers were made with the winch hidden and real cute looking... Problem was when being used the cable would bunch and hang up under there and there was nothing to do but take the whole shebang off and get it straight and then put it all back on. I would advise putting a winch where you can get at it when needed. Big Jim

Can the cable bunch up in those road armor bumpers too that are also winch mounts? I guess you are suggesting that the best winch mount is one of those kind that would act as a grill guard too or something and keep the winch right in the open?

Yup the grill guard/winch mount works well. Its easier to get to. And you can do so much more with it than if its sitten in hiding.

I think the best bet is a front and rear 2" tube hitch and leave the winch at home till you go 4 wheelin! Just mount the winch to a 2" receiver bar and add some 12v and you will be in business. Big JIm

that sounds good cuz it was what I was originally thinking....not that there is anything wrong with the grill guard setups, they look real good, I just didn't want the extra weight up front all the time. My only concern with the receiver hitch mount is that it will put the winch alot lower than the grill mount I think so I am concerned about my approach angle

You could always leave it in the back until you get stuck, then mount it up when you need it. Just put some nice weather sheilded power connectors front and back.

sounds good and just from what I've looked up so far, the 2" receiver way is a LOT cheaper then getting that whole grill guard setup too

If you had the stuff you could make one. I say grill guard cuz of crap you might bump into depending upon what all you do. At the ranch and what not you never know. A stray deer or something

Most grill guards if you hit a deer with em the grill guard gets into the radiator instead of the deer! I have had to pry a bunch of em out of grills, fenders and hoods. Now if you let me make you one and put it on the frame real good... Back when there was not so much stuff under the hood we would cut holes in the front of the grill/fender and angle-brace the grill guard back down to the frame from the top. These ones would do the job. But each job had to be fabricated in place and mass producing was not possible. The first grill gaurds I remember were used to open gates that swung open by the vehicle pushing on the gate. Called bunp-gates. If you never saw one they are pretty neat. You can tell a newby to bumpgates by the dent in his back fender. If you get in a big hurry the gate will getcha. But I digress. Big Jim
