Hello all. I am new here. I have an 88 4runner. Now that it is almost summer, I want to use my sunroof. (didn't have this problem with my old 4runner that was totaled last Oct., because it didn't have a sunroof.) The problem is that I want to leave my Thule roof rack on and one of the bars goes right across the middle of the sunroof. Does anyone have any solutions to this problem. They make taller feet for the racks. This may be an option. (I have the shortest they make.) Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Get some of the artificial rain gutters and mount them on the fiberglass top. DO NOT use the fiberglass rain gutters above the rear sliding windows unless you're looking for some insurance money because the rack and everything on it came off and was run over by everyone behind you. Of course, you could have to pay more than you'd get out of the insurance if any of those pieces impaled themselves in a vehicle (or person).

Huh? I used one on the cab and one on the fiberglass rails for 8 years on my 1989 4runner with no problems. I would like to keep it closer to the front of the truck if possible, because it has a wind dflector that looks cool. -Eric

I'm do not know about the Thule system, but I have the Yakima System with a sun roof and when the sun roof is open I still have about an inch left. I have picked up used rain gutter Yakima racks from rack dealers and "Play it Again" type stores for under $50.00. You could also try Ebay.

Damn! That is a monster rack bro. Awesome 4runner too. Is that an '88 like mine? The only problem with that setup is that I want to take the sunroof out. I mainly just want to use it to haul snowboards. Thanks for the advice.

Yes it is an 88 4Runner. I just took a look and the 2 bars by the sunroof sit far enough forward and back to unbolt the sunroof and push it out. It seems yours should too. Unless you have some sort off an after market sun roof. Welcome to the board and Good Luck!!

Cool! Like I said though I don't really need or want that much rack space, just the two bars to carry my snowboards. The taller feet might work for me. It is a factory sunroof. You know those can be popped out without unbolting anything. At least mine can. You just pinch the things that hold it up when open. Thanks again.

Anyone know how much weight a rack mounted only on the fiberglass back will hold?

livelarg - mounted properly, you can easily exceed the rack manufacturer's recommended limits. I've had 300lbs on mine for short trips. Truck was really top-heavy though. Sucked a lot of gas, too.
