Whats redline for a 22RE?
      #615977 - 10/26/04 05:57 PM

I was wondering what is the redline for a 22RE, and since I dont have a tach installed, what would the speed be that I can safely shift at? I currently shift too 2nd @ 15mph, 3rd @ 30mph, 4th @ 40mph, and 5th @ 60 mph. At those speeds nothing seems like its turning any real high RPMs. My truck has 4.10 in the rear, and 235x75 R15 Tires I believe there about 29" OD. I have calculated some numbers for mph vs RPM but I know there not true since I cant figure out how many RPM I would be loosing due to load resistance. Anyone have any Ideas to any of these questions?

Thanks Guys

i believe 5500 is the redline on an RE. I'd shift whereever you feel comfortable and that you have enough torque to move.

hmmm...i've never paid much attention to the MPH of when i shift.

i do know that i'm only in 5th at 60 if i am on a prefectly flat or downhill section of highway and i'm not trying to accelerate...if i'm trying to accelerate on a flat stretch at 60mph, i'm in 4th. if i am going up a hill at 60, i am often in 3rd. (I have 30" tires and 4.10 gears).

the 22RE loves to rev. doesn't seem to even hit it's powerband until at least 3000RPMs...and then runs strong to at least 5000.

Here's how to find out. Rev it really high and listen for a big KABOOM. Then ya know exactly the REDLINE point.

Sorry brother, just had ta jab ya. Like someone else said, around 5500 the rods start ta turn to rubber. I rev around 3-3.5K and engage the clutch around 2K...pretty smooth.

Get a SUNPRO or any aftermarket tach. The mini tachs work great and are easy to install, but best of all are inexpensive ($35).

Exact number is 5750. Look around in the owner's manual... they have a section on "if the max power is needed, you can shift a these speeds" section. Basically you can take third gear up to 65 or if you really have to 70.
