If you have any electrical accessories over stock (lights, amp), I'd suggest installing the largest AH rated battery that will fit in the battery tray. Most any of the larger sizes will have sufficient CCA to start your truck, but the best batteries will withstand deeper/longer discharge with more frequency than a cheaper battery.

To avoid problems with gassing and acid spills that lead to a rusted out battery tray, I'd suggest an AGM type battery.

If you can spend the difference in money, I'd further suggest a Lifeline AGM - more AH capacity, more RC, and it's a sealed unit:

Lifeline Batteries

Others will suggest Optima as an alternate, I'm sure. If you do decide to get the Lifeline, don't let anyone see it or you'll be branded an heretic and excommunicated from 4x4dom forever.....

Frank,

Since he's got a gen I like you (& I...) which Lifeline model are you using?

Also, how much was it?

Hi Ray -

I haven't bought mine yet. I'm still repainting and redoing the interior next - plus my dinky little battery (Group 22 I think) is still good.

I'll put a Lifeline in it as soon as I finish the work. A Group 31 will fit "if" you make a new heat shield (needs another inch toward the engine - but - it will make it harder to reach the tranny dipstick and will be slightly more exposed to heat from the exhaust manifolds and down-pipe.

I plan to use a Group 27, which fits the space with no modification. If you compare the Group 27 Lifeline to the Group 31 Optima, you'll find that the Lifeline Group 27 beats the Optima in all but CCA. That's the trade-off in battery design. The Optima is a better cranking battery, but the Lifeline is a better battery for extended discharge and still has plenty of CCA for our trucks. The reason is because of the heavier plates in the Lifeline - it's more of a deep-cycle hybrid design than the Optima - 65 lbs weight for the Lifeline Group 27 compared to 60 lbs for the Optima Group 31.

Never had one - but I will before too long. If you call Lifeline, they might save you some money on the price. I got a quote from them a couple of months ago, but misplaced it - over $100 though - maybe $135 or so.

Ray -

Sorry - on the price I was thinking about the Concorde SunXtender solar battery - reportedly the same battery as Lifeline (also made by Concorde), but with blade terminals (for through-bolting) instead of automotive post terminals and usually sold for lower prices.

I doubt there's much difference in the battery construction, but I'm not absolutely certain.

Here's a link to a site that quotes the PVX-1040T (similar specs to Lifeline Group 27) at $140:

http://www.thesolarbiz.com/Concorde_Battery.htm

and another that quotes the Lifeline Group 27 at $180:

http://www.batteryweb.com/concorde.cfm

I think the telephone price quote I got from Lifeline's listed number was $160.

On any of these sites, be very careful of shipping costs - some are outrageous. Besides, you'd be better off to find a nearby dealer if prices are reasonable.

Here you can read the claim that the batteries are the same except for terminal connections:
