Thoughts on 4x4 Trannies for 2JZ swap
      #53671 - 06/02/03 03:18 PM

Just wondering what ideas anyone has on my planned swap for a 2JZ-GTE into my 89' 4 banger. Specifically I am trying to figure out what transmission solution I want to go with. All ideas are welcome. If anyone is familiar with JZ bell housings and transmissions (1JZ or 2JZ) I want to talk to you.

Talk to Dave Gysland at Super T Motorsports:

Dave swapped a 2JZ-GTE into his '93 2WD drag truck. I know it's not exactly the same as what you want to do, but he can probably tell you which trannies will work.

Thanks Mosk...

As I learn more about this swap, the more interesting it gets...

Most suposedly "custom shops" are totally retarded, and I get the feeling the average user on 4x4wire knows more then most shops, why is that?

I called Dave, but no one answered the phone. So I left a message, I am out of state so they might not call back though, do you have his email?

Yup, I will document it thouroughly, utterly and completely. I am getting a digital camera, and will take a picture of everything I touch. The Goal is not only to make it driveable, but legal (:

As far as I know I'd be the first... cheers to me.

This motor will rock. [Smile]

The only toy 4WD tranny I think would take that abuse is the R151 turbo 4banger. I know the W and G series trannies aren't up to it. [Smile]

if i were doing this swap, i would try to find a way to use a supra turbo tranny. my first choice would be to use the tranny that came with the 2jz-gte. next, maybe the r154 would bolt to the 2jz-gte??? or if not, maybe if the 1jz-gte bellhousing would allow the r154 to bolt to the 2jz-gte motor.

There are models of the R154 that will bolt up to the 2JZ-GTE, basically any of 5 speed manuals that came on 1JZ or 2JZ vehicles. The non-turbo manual supra in the US came with the R154 stock from 88 to 93, so that shouldn't be too difficult to find.

i did a little researching and here's what i came up with. hope this helps.

the non-turbo 7m-ge and the non-turbo 2jz-ge came with a W58.

the 2jz-gte 6 speed came with a German Getrag v160/v161.

there was a 5 speed that was offered with the 2jz-gte, but i don't know which transmission it was. (maybe an R-154?)

the 7m-gte came with a R-154.

the R-154's output shaft can be swapped with a Toyota Pickup v6's R150 shorter output shaft to retain the transfer case and 4wd.
