Locked keys in my '88 Troop-best way in?
      #511598 - 04/29/04 07:45 AM

Hi all, I locked my keys up in my 88 trooper, and was just wondering if anyone knew an easy way to get in. I haven't tried yet, but will try this afternon. Thanks.

Do you have power door locks or not?

If so, I had to "break" into my 89 trooper a couple times. If you take something like a long knife or even a stiff coathangar and push it down the drivers side window you can slimjim the lock open. Another time I noticed that I left my corner sail open so I fished a coat hangar around the post and pulled her open.

i go through the front vent windows with a coat hanger
and opent he vent window so i can get to the lock...
you have to fish the coat hanger through the rubber gasket
it tears the gasket up a little - but if you are in a bind...

If you have to break a window, break the window on the small rear door. It'll be the easiest and cheapest to replace. Maybe even cheaper than a locksmith.

I couldn't imagine breaking my own window on purpose. That must be a very odd sensation...

Uhhhhhh...NO!!! The original question was, in case you missed it... "just wondering if anyone knew an easy way to get in". Sent him a PM about how to do it in about 10 seconds without doing ANY damage whatsoever!!

I had to break a window in the desert, when I locked my keys in. FWIW, the small rear "vent" window on the rear doors is VERY EXPENSIVE ($180 was the cheapest I could find from a window dealer IIRC).

Later when vandals smashed this same window I was able to purchase it from Merlin at St. Charles for about $90 - it just took some time to receive.

Now I have two hide-a-keys on my rig at all times!!

if you're sending it in PM for the purpose of keeping theiving a-holes from learning a new trick, keep this in mind:

they don't care if they damage your truck. they just pry the lock off or smash a window, then rip the sh$#% out of your dash as they remove the stereo and whatever else they want
