For any of you who are interested in the low pinion 8" 5.29s, you really should get ahold of Aki (Misterbishi's contact in Japan) now. These are the scarce gears that fit the V6 front diff and four cylinder rear diff. There was only a few sets left in Japan, and those were all sold. None left in the world new. However, Aki has convinced Mitsubishi Japan to do a production run. The cost is the same as before, but they are actually going to produce new sets.
I am very surprised that they are going to do a production run, especially since there are only two orders (Aki ordered a spare set and I ordered a set). I doubt they will do this again, so here is the chance to get these gears before they go the way of the buffalo.
Aki has been super helpful and seems to be a geniuinely good fellow. If I had the extra cash right now, I would order several sets and use or resell them down the road.
The 9" rear 5.29s are still plentiful in stock. For both sets and shipping, its a little shy of 1K. I'm sure there are many who consider this too much to spend, they're gonna do an SAS, etc., etc. But for what I use this truck for, no way am I trading away the excellent stock IFS.
Just a heads up, now is the time to put the $ down on what could be the last chance for 8" 5.29s...

What's his contact info? Even a telephone number would work since I can call from work.
TIA,

Now a 99 version Montero would have 9", right. These are Mitsubishi gears, right. How come the Mitsu dealers dont have access to these gears here. I think Carlos has gotten them here?

Carlos got a set of 4.90's not 5.29's. 4.90's are all that are available for the larger dif's.
Why can't dealers get them in the US? Because Mitsu's never imported the 5.29's so there's no stock in the US. Kinda the same reason we don't have PTO's available here.

Yours is more like a 10.25" ring gear But with your nearly un-wheelable 4:22s, 4:90s would rock, then pickup some 2:85 t/case gears

Thats great if Mitsu does another production run. They have probably seen a rush on the 8" 5.29, the remaining stock in Oz (2 sets) and Japan (13 sets) was bought up and prior to this they have probably been in stock for many years without moving. Now within 12 months all remaining stock is gone !!! I'll order a set as well.
I don't have Aki's phone number. This is the website he created for the 5.29 gears, http://www.jsroot.com/~gear/

Yea, I think it's pretty steep for gears. That is 3 times as much as you'd pay for gears for any other vehicle!
I wonder why they charge so much for these???

No it's not Lee.............. Over here Nissan Patrol factory gear sets run around $1000 for a 4.60 ratio and thats for one set not a front and rear pair. Precision Gears are around $450 Aus per set but only last about 30-40K. The factory Mitsu sets are pretty well priced at around $600 a set. I don't know what you guys pay for factory parts over there but I initially thought the Mitsu stuff was expensive until I heard the factory prices on the Toyo/Nissan stuff. I think Caps got his 4.90's from a supplier over there for around $700 US for both the front and rear, over here it would cost $1300 Aus to get them from Mitsu so Caps has done very well.
