Transmission: Which fluid., ATF+ or Dexron II ? (GenI 3.0)
      #266023 - 01/26/01 10:13 AM

89 4dr V6 auto...tranny fluid....<P>I'm going to be flushing the transmission fluid.<BR>After some investigation of previous posts, I find a difference of opinion as to whether to use Dexron II (as the manual for my 89 says) or to go with the ATF +, if I understand correctly, is what the newer models run with. <P>"...use ATF+, anything else will ruin the transmission..."<P>Anyone use the ATF + in any of their 89 - 91 Montero's?<P>Fhuzz<BR>

My 95 Factory service manual specifically says Mitsu ATF or Dextron II. Nowhere in the manual says to use ATF+ or Mitsu ATF+.
I flush it using Valvoline Dextron III 6 months ago and notice no problem or any difference.
I would go with OEM Mitsu if you are really concern about it.

LAST TIME, IF YOU USE ANYTHING OTHER THEN ATF+ II FROM MITSUBISHI OR OVER THE COUNTER THAT SAYS SPECIFICALLY FOR MITSUBISHI AND CHRYSLER AUTOMATICS YOU WILL BURN YOUR TRANNY SOONER, OR LATER, THATS THE COLD HARD FACTS PROVEN BY MANY, EVEN HERE. Now that that nonsense is out of the way I am changing my fluid becuase I burn it up yearly spending so much time stalling and overheating off-road do to the crappy gearing. A HUGE question people have been asking, especially on the Running Board is what 2000-2001 Sport Tronic and Invecs trannys should use. The scoop is the ATF+ II for ALL other Mits trannys has been upgraded further and continues being for all Mits auto trannys throughout history. The only concern is not to use the older ATF+ II in those new trannys. The new designation is ATF+ III instead of ATF+ II. The eliminates Quaker state as an option for 2000+ trannys.

1st dont shout at me!!!!!

2nd: I am only state what is written in the factory service manual. For 95 Montero with 3.5 DOHC engine they recommend Diamond SP, Dextron II or equivalent. Note: It does not say Mitsubishi ATF+, ATF +2 or ATF+3 like you mention.

3rd: my truck is different year than yours.

4th: My reply are only because:

ATF+ is the aftermarket designation. Diamond SP II or III are the Mits brand designations and Dexron has nothing in common with SP II or III. I also have a 93, they are all the same tranny untill 2001 models. Not sure where you are reading Dexron, but it will smoke the Mits tranny. These are some of the finest trannys in the world, but they require special fluid.

Your 93 does not have the same tranny as mine. Mine is V4AW3 that came behind 3.0 24 valve and 3.5, while the one behind 3.0 12 valve is the smaller V4AW2.
If you compare the diagram in the manual mine is almost 50% bigger in diameter.

The manual says Diamond SP not Diamond SP2 or Diamond SP3

Thats all my 92-93 manual and 89-91 manual call it also, SP. BUT, SP II was the latest version and it is now replaced by SPIII to handle the latest high tech trannies. So your manual says SP, and when you goto Mits you end up with the latest version of SP, which is now III. They no longer sell II. There are NOT different types, only one updated.

Hell, you guys got me convinced. I have an '88 4 banger with auto tranny, and I'm going to go find the Mitsu dealer and get their ATF !
Just have to find a dealer around here!
Just so I am 100% positive though.... I can use the ATF+ II, or the ATF+ III right ???

Two MRI's and a CAT scan....it's confirmed. I'm just not right in the head.
