Tires: Brands
      #264768 - 08/05/00 04:54 PM

O.K. So I am comtemplating a set of 33" tires for my MS. I have it narrowed down to 3. I currently run on 31" BFG TA/ko's. I love them. It's just time for new tires.
First I would like to find a pic of the new tread design for the BFG Mudders. I go to the BFG website and find out that they don't even produce tires. They sold the business to Michelin in 1986. So I go to that site and they don't even have the new tread yet.
Second I am considering the Bridgestone Dueler MT's. I know, I know, a lot of people don't like them but I have a brother in law that has them on his Jeep and they have done great. $145.00.
I also like the Yoko Geolander MT. Awsome tread but I am worried about the soft compound and how long they will last. Price is good though $130.00(I have a cousin in the tire business).
I definately like the new Goodyear Wrangler MTR. But is the price worth it. $175.00.
What does everyone think?

Check www.bfgoodrichtires.com .

The new MT will not be out until sometime in 2001.

I currently have the Bridgestone MT's and they are awesome tires. Got them for $123/ea from Tire Rack. I have 15k miles with hardly any wear. I don't agree at all with the theory that "good" offroad tires have to wear out quickly: BFG and Bridgestone are two prime examples of great offroad tires that last many miles. However, if you care about the sport of 4-wheeling, I'd caution against buying Bridgestone/Firestone since they donated land in Tennessee to preservation - land that had been used by ORV for many years.

The new Goodyears look nice, but the tread is very shallow - like the BFG AT. The price is ridiculous, but people are willing to pay.

It might not hurt to look at Kumho's, which are supposed to be excellent tires but are kind of hard to find. The ProComp MT's look good too, have a decent price, and they're siped - I think they're made by Dunlop. I have a friend with them who praises them.

If they'll also be your daily driver tires, then get BFG MT's...

I too am going to be in the market for new tires soon. After OVER 100K on my current BFG MT's (still have 3/8-1/4" tread left) they will need replacing very soon.

I'll be getting a set of AT's first. (Not sure which...) They'll be 33's to go on my current aluminum rims. These I'll use for everyday driving. I'll want a harder rubber compound on these for optimal life.

Then I also plan on getting the Yokohama Geolander MT's to go on a set of black wagon wheel steel rims for off road use only.

Before you buy I would recommend you to stop by 1 stop tire shop This place got comprehensive link to tire manufacturer, retailer, online retailer, FAQ and many more.

I spend more than 3 months hunting for the perfect tires, perfect price and perfect opportunity. My length search paid off last week. Take your time before you decide and remember not all 33X12.50 are the same size.

If you dont mind swapping tires (got the time to swap every time and place to store it) then buy 2 sets of tire and wheel for specific purpose. Like buying cooper discoverer AT for everyday driving and using swamper for offroad. You could get those cooper discoverer AT really cheap from Costire andy they handle much better on wet and snow compared to AT ko.

I love winter driving but mud tires tend to do not very well on ice. According to Edward Geolander MT are excellent on ice. That factor makes up a lot of points during my decision making and I dont really like swapping tires everytime you would go off road plus I dont have place to store it.

Good luck. I hope I did not overwhelmed you.

I checked a few places around Denver for prices and availability of the Goodyear MT/R's in 285/75R16. Both Sears and www.tirerack.com have them for $170. Then I ordered them from 4 Wheel Parts. Otherwise, Discount Tire will also price match and are just as good. No one has them in stock anywhere in Colorado. Anywhere will take at least a week just to order these tires (rims may take longer).

You could also try the Cooper Discover STT mud tires, I have found that they work great on mud & rocks also not to bad road handling as well for a mud tire.

Guys what about the Swampers? Anybody used them on their Monty? I have a friend with them on his Jeep, and he swears by them...I am shopping for tires the "Augie Way": taking my time, and considering all options.

The TSL is the only tire I've found that comes in 32 x 9.50. That to me is an ideal size. Not too wide for the stock rims, but tall enough to give some decent clearance under the diffs. Also narrow enough for decent snow performance. My question is, are these things totally unsuitable for pavement? I only have space for one set of tires/rims, and I do a nice bit of snow driving, as well as mud, but I wonder how impossible they'd be for the occasional highway trip? "Tyres Int'l" lists the 32s for $115 ea...not bad. Anyone used them? JW, aren't you running swampers on your domestic iron?

Hi guys,

In the past, I've always used BFG Muds. I started with 285/75-16's which equate to about 32.5" but aren't too wide. They were excellent in all conditions, and were quiet on the road and good in the wet. However, I've now moved to Kumho 833"s (tire type, not size!). They have a similar pattern to the BFG Muds, although the tread is not quite as deep, but the lugs are further apart, so you get better cleaning (ie; the mud flies off better!). I've also running a set of Swampers (Q78-16) which are 35.5" by about 9.5. The Kumho's are 35-12.5/15. Both tires are running on 8" rims using the Toyota offset. I've set up many Monty's (mostly early ones) with 33's with no rubbing once we've reset the ride height re front arms height reset and reset or replaced rear leaves/coils. The trick is to use the correct offset.

Have fun!

Thanks for all the info everyone. I will definately check out some other brands of tires that were brought up with my Cousin who runs a Peerless. The rims I will be running them on are the one's I currently have a 15 x 8 with 4" backspacing. So there will be plenty of room for the 33"s. Just have to make sure I have the power to keep them going. Or maybe look into regearing. Don't know yet. Thanks again for the info.

I love my TSL.. they are completely unmached for offroad performance... they are 34x9x16.. i have found that these tall skinnys are more noisy than most swampers mostly because they are %90 side lugs with a tiny bit of tread inbetween... i keep my chevy dubbed "POE" at my friends house who is across the street from our trail head so the only street time they get is when i go for gas which i have only done twice now... he lives 1/8 mile from the highway and the gas station is one mile down the highway.. i have had it up to 60 MPH once now and it was very noisy, but not unbearable .357 noisy.. just as loud as the 400 SB with 4.10 gears and a 3 speed tranny... they handle good onroad.. they dont wander or anythingcrazy like that.. you will never have to worry about side wall damage with these tires.. the sidewalls are over one inch thick.. at the normal 55-85 PSI they ride like a brick, but at 20 or so its pretty smooth...
they are evil offroad i wouldnt trade them for anything...
