More Freak Tech: Unique Serpentine Belt
      #240303 - 07/07/03 08:48 PM

* Anyone seen a serpentine belt with ribs on BOTH sides?
* Anyone driving the power steering pump off the flat side of the belt?
I've been spending a lot of time in the junkyard lately, and I'm currently stumped on both....

Getting the belt right in my engine swap is gonna be a serious PITA, though.... especially with a crank pulley, air pump, alternator, AC compressor, and steering box ... and later possibilities of adding another alternator and another AC pump. I can route it any way I need to, but how to make it work without slipping?

A two-sided serpentine belt would be a perfect solution, if such a critter exists... otherwise I'm gonna need about a dozen idler pullers.

I've seen quite a few cars that drive a water pump off the flat side of the belt, but never a PS pump or alternator -- if I could do that, it would REALLY help with belt routing.

It all comes down to surface area of belt/pulley engagement, and ribbed pulleys offer more than flat pulleys... anyone done some creative thinking in this regard?

I checked out the Gates Rubber site and did a search on double and on two-sided. Neither yielded anything of use.

Background: To squeeze a 302 into my truck, I'm entirely reworking the front accessory dress (pulleys, water pump, timing cover, and accessory brackets). Custom brackets galore, but it is gaining me the three inches that I need and allowing a front-to-back squeeze that I couldn't have achieved, even with the 94-95 SN95 Mustang's shorter front accessory dress. Running a Suzuki compressor and Cavalier PS pump has allowed a left-to-right sqeeze, as well, which is needed since I've elected to keep my fender wells and stock steering.

All of this results in a unique serpentine belt routing... one made even more entertaining by the remote electric water pump.

It is coming together pretty well, but I'm just wondering what sort of creativity there is out there for serpentine belts.... anyone have useful suggestions? I'm a big believer in working outside the box, so let's brainstorm a bit...

I check Gates and Goodyear, Jim. The closest I got was a reference on the GY site about some soon-to-be-introduced Goodyear Eagle synchronous profiled belts, but I don't know if I'd have to use their pulleys for that... These are expected to use a self-centering herringbone cog pattern that won't require a pulley flange for retention. They sound perfect for what I need but as yet, they seem to be vaporware. [Frown]

I have a call in with their tech center... we'll see...

I don't quit know your total swap but I know racers use only the waterpump, idler, crank and alt no smog or powersteering. allthough I think you want powersteering.

Could it be possible to make a double sided belt??? take two belts, turn one inside out
and put the slick sides together with some sort of epoxy or "super glue" don't laugh you asked us to brainstorm

I have looked for mag but augh!!! my dads friend
used a setup from???? it mounted a.c./alt. up hi above valvecovers w/helm jointed tentioners
one on each side of engine...it mounted P/S on drvrs side smog on pass and used 1 serpentene
belt for a.c/alt.crank/p/s and a vbelt
(I think...long time ago [Big Grin] )to run smog..
tensioner was mounted to middle of engine above waterpump....I think smog was a bolt/add on it was for a hotrod. The waterpump/tension where backside driven.
I'll look for article if I can find it I'll let
you know.

Hmmmm.......I faced a simular problem with the Motorhome a couple of weeks ago. I needed to add a hydraulic pump for the power brakes, but had no where to put it where it could be powered by the main belt. So I made a double pulley. one 9 groove and one 6 groove. The 9 groove is in the stock location and the 6 groove is right next to it. The fan clutch is the spin on kind so it wasn't that hard to get on and off. Although I did have to grind down a wrench to make it thinner to fit behind there to take it off.
Here a picture of how I did it. They bolt onto the water pump in the stock location. The 6 groove is very close to the fan but doesn't touch it at all. The hydraulic pump I mounted on top of the head. But it's a six cylinder and there was no room to the side of the block.
Just an idea.

Yep. 2001 Volvo S60 has one. I can't guarantee when they started it, but that's a huge family of engines in the past 10 years or more to look for. S80, S60, S40, Vxx, Cxx, 850, etc, etc.

Odds aren't very good they'll match the length you need, but it's a start.
