i should have known better than to trust a local shop with sealing up the aisins last winter...but after trying to lock a hub last week, and failing...i knew it was time to break them down and check them out.
The drivers side was pretty good, just a couple light spots of surface rust. got it back together quick and moved on.
when i popped off the cover of the passenger side, i wanted to puke. ther must have been some kind of Iron Spider in there weaving a web of rust. everything was caked...so i dove into it.
After a long soak in some naval jelly and bouts with the wire wheel, everything came back out shiny...but i feel i should replace at least the long spring, and the detent ball is pretty much useless now. I need to drill out the spring for the detent and replace it and the ball, and the main spring, but noone seems to have parts for them.
Now, as I understand things, most of the internals of the Zu hubs are interchangeable with just about any other AISIN hub...so if i should happen across one in a junkyard on a Yota, it should be okay, RIGHT? Now, shouldn't a rinky dink 4 wheeler shop have some parts for these things too?
And lastly, the O-Rings..shouldnt' they be round (cross section)? Mine are square...not sure if they are supposed to be like that to hold grease or whatnot, but it feels like when i push the selecter knob back into the cap of the housing, the oring rotates inside and is sitting in a goofy position. Would regular round O-Rings be a better replacement? Where to get them?

First thing coming to my head would be to try a Toyota parts dealer.

Jason,
I had mine apart to clean and repaint them. My internals were still in good shape so can't really point you in right direction for replacement parts. But my o-rings were not of the round cross section either. They were kinda squarish and appeared to have a "top and a bottom side" (not symetrical).
Sorry can't help you out with more. I would be inclined to get a cap from another Aisin and check out the insides. I would imagine the detent spring and ball have a good chance of being interchangeable but the long spring might be a long shot . IIRC aren't other Aisins bigger or smaller than ours? Don't know if this affects internal dimensions or not.
Good luck.

Found this excerpt from the one link I gave you.
quote: I obtained four different flavors of AISIN hubs for this article. Clockwise from top-left in the picture are hubs from an IFS Toyota 4Runner, a solid axle Toyota pickup, a 1993 Isuzu Amigo, and one from a Suzuki Samurai, Of these four, the Isuzu was the odd duck - the hub body was much smaller overall (with a different bolt pattern) than the others, it doesn't use cone washers for mounting, and the dial is built in such a way to reduce the extent of the travel of the clutch. The factors combine to make this hub a very compact unit. Still, the clutch, pawl, springs, and other parts are compatible with the other hubs.
I also remember seeing a site that had part numbers for these things. I believe it was a yota but at least it gives numbers. I'll keep looking.

Jason, get to a good hardware store, they'll have most of what you need. The detent ball and spring can be replaced with similar size parts -- close *IS* good enough, here. O-rings are possible, too.
The longer springs won't be attainable at a hardware store, though... and may not be possible even at a Toyota delaership. I wouldn't be surprised if the hub was available only as a unit. The good news is that there's not a lot of force on the pawl springs, so I bet they'll be fine if cleaned up and inserted with fresh lube.
Junkyard parts will work, too, for the parts you need, and having a spare along would provide good peace of mind.

The cool thing about 2gens and spare parts is that the only spare parts needed are the stock axle flanges. just bolt the old ones back on, and put some RTV on them. No more grenaded hubs I just find it so hard to believe that AISIN doesn't offer rebuild kits for the hubs...complete with new springs, detent ball, and gaskets.

Are 2nd gen Rodeo/Amigo hubs the same as 1st gen trooper?I will be going to junkyard to get a set to use on 98 rodeo he doesn't know if they will fit but he told me I could try them,if they work he'll take $50 for a set.(it's still basically a 10 bolt?)There are at least 10sets and several superwinch sets also.I will probably get them cheaper than that....normally he'll say give me a few dollars? best of all I get to get them and pick and choose my self! Any Isuzu hubs from mid-88 up should work. You'll have to get new 26mm snap rings. $50 is a good deal. I got mine on ebay for about that price with shipping. Be prepared to tear them apart and clean them, one of mine was packed with mud. I used this link to figure out how they went back together: Bruce Anderson's Page
In fact just bookmark Bruce's site while you're at it. Lots of good stuff on there. -chris
