downside of bigger tires
      #215502 - 06/20/03 05:53 PM

Well,

The moment has finally come with my dad buying some nice tires and rims. But, here is the concern. We plan on getting 32" 11.5 r15 procomp
A/t's, on those black rockcrawler rims. Now, with all this extra weight, strain is put on the suspension, most importantly the front. Now, I just go offroading maybe once a month with my friends, and don't do hardcore wheeling. What kind of stress is going to be put on my transfer case, and transmission, and aswell as my wheelbearings? Basically, what I'm trying to get to here is if it's okay, and economical in the long run to put on these tires.

Thanks to all

Jared

Hi Bill,

Unfortunately I doubt anyone knows for sure the amount of added stress you're putting on your monty by doing that but I doubt the amount is significant over the next 3-5 years.

I guess it all is a matter: how much you`ll go off road in a way, how much you`d lower you tyre pressure and so on.. Like my former wheel`s BF Goodrich All Terrain, I went not that much hard off road`ing with out eny that much lowering air pressure to get more traction, and those tyre`s I had for some year`s with out loosing that much grip during our winter time.. But with my new 35" 12,5 BF/G AT I have done some more and hard`er off road`ing and I guess those would`nt last that much I guess.. [Eek!]

Basic: the hard`er your tyre is, that more distance you`ll run, less hard`er tyre you have, better traction and sorry, less distance you see with youre tyre.. [Smile]

I hope you understood my answer.. [Smile]

my advice: don't worry about it so much.

stick on nice big tires, and enjoy the grin you'll be wearing from how badass your truck performs and looks.

Many of us have run big tires on these trucks AND abused the hell out of them, and not caused any undue acceleration of wear.

Remember that yes, there will be more load on the wheel bearings per revolution, but your tires will turn fewer revolutions per mile.

Yes, there will be more inertia when the heavier wheel deflects over a bump, but it will deflect far less on average because of taller sidewalls.

It all balances out. [Big Grin]

The biggest wear item I've noticed with larger than stock tires is the plastic bushing in the idler arm. This seems to take all the abuse, while everything else is protected. Cheap, 5 minute fix, so not a big concern...

Thanks for al lof your replies,

I am thankfull that I have good news to tell my dad, and I am looking forward to seeing all the grins. The reason for getting procomps, is because 4wheel parts wholsalers has a buy 3 get 1 free deal going on until June 30.

I'll get some pics up the day I get them

thanks

Oh, you'll notice a difference, all right. With a four cylinder truck, it won't hold speed going up hills as well, and acceleration is affected to the negative. Think about it: you are trying to turn the wheels the same number of turns at a given rpm, but the truck is going farther with each revolution, which takes more power, which the 2.6 doesn't have. But other than feeling like you threw an anchor out the back (or should I say an additional anchor), it should be fine. You get used to it!
