t-bar crank and alignment
      #20823 - 09/09/02 12:48 AM

I was wondering... How much does your alignment change after crankning up the t-bars for a bit of lift (only 1" or so)
Anyone else running this and have other comments about the setup? I know it does not change total articulation or anything, just raises it up.
Thanks
Brian

I'm not sure how much it throws the alignment out of kilter.
But I was told that every time you mess with cranking the T bar up or down, you had better get it realigned as it does throw it off.

Simply measuring before and after is not a guarantee if you want to put it back again.

They use precise machines at the alignment shops to get it to spec.
Anything off by a few degrees or so is going to effect tire life, and the tracking of your rig.

This info I was told be a few friends who work at alignment shops.

dunno how much of that i'd believe
camber and caster on a stock p'up has a WIDE range of ok values
i had an idler arm and steering box with mondo play and it BARELY showed on 225/75s
i do my own alignment with a level and a tape measure
but to get it 'perfect'
i use wut i've learned from messing with it
i use no measurements when doing that

I did it at the shop with the help of a friendly employee..And I will tell you what, you better get an alignment right after you raise it up, my wheels were like this \ / and thats not too far off at all.

I havent noticed a change in the way it rides, yes its stiffer.. but it was stiff to start with and know i have more clearance..

Definately worked for me.

After I cranked my front t-bars 1.5" (from the stock 13.5" to 15" measured from the top of the rim to bottom on the fender well seam), the front wheels were splayed out like "/ \." I had a tire shop align it, but they couldn't get it right, so I had the Toyota dealer do it. Steering feels perfect again, and the tires look like "\ /" (not quite this extreme, but slightly). Since my rear springs have settled a bit since new 5 months ago, I might have to drop the t-bars 1/4", which will change the alignment somewhat (I'm guessing the tires will look more like "\ /")...will probably wait a little longer to see if the t-bars need to be dropped. It's kind of an illusion on the 1st gen 4runners, since the rear fender well is lower cut than the front one, accentuating any sag (but if you look at the softop, the front is still a tad lower).

it's basic geometry.

as you raise or lower the outer 2 points, the plane that the tires moves is perpendicular to them.

the aligment just changes that plane...

geez... i think i just confused myself...

Actually, this would be true if both a-arms were the same length. They aren't though. The top is shorter and will swing in/out more rapidly causing camber issues. I would recommend an alignment after adjusting.

I have messed with my t-bars plenty and settled in with an inch or so over stock as well finding that it gave a good compromise between clearance, etc...
