Engine Oil Leakage Preventative Maintenence. Thats a mouthful!
      #194425 - 12/02/02 06:03 PM

A while back ago I was talking to my old neighbor. He drove a street racer. He bought a 1996 VW Golf and tricked it out. You see, he and I were considered the "Car Guys" because we were always messing around with one another's vehicles. Anyway, he was telling me about this oil leak problem that he had just fixed at the time. He told me that he was at a local street racer "gathering" a while back and when he poped open his hood, his buddy right away saw that he had just developed a fresh oil leak.

Now let me tell you about this guy. He is a neat freak. Once he spilled a little oil on his drive way while changing the oil on his wifes truck, and I swear he was out there for about 20 minutes with a spray bottle and a huge stack of raggs trying to remove the oil. Then he hosed it down for about the same amount of time. My rigs all leak, so needless to say I have spots every where. I can't do anything now to offset the stain. Except try to fix the oil leak after the fact. My driveway is now beyond recovery.

The reason his buddy caught the oil leak so quickly before it developed into a bigger problem, is that his engine is this bright orange color that the oil dripping down the block was easily contrasted to.

Idea: What if I painted my block a bright color. I don't really care about how dirty it will eventually get, I just want to make sure I'm not DRIPPING oil anymore.

I found this picture on the web. I was thinking something like this, exept not all of the hoses and all of the trimming on this picture, although that would be pretty unique:

 -

My neighbor moved away this past summer so I can't just talk to him anytime I want to. I wish he was still around so he could tell me how to paint the engine a bright color.

I have the engine block out and I am currently in the process of rebuilding it. Now would be a perfect opportunity to paint it.

Hence, Engine Oil Leakage Preventative Maintence

Questions:
Does anyone here know how to paint an engine like this?
What is involved?
Any Ideas?

I'm sure it can be done and like any paint job you have to...
have a clean block (no oil, dirt or anything else that would prevent the paint from adhering to the surface)
use the right paint (high temp, and resistant to various engine fluids)
break out the drop cloths and lots of tape for taping off everything you don't want painted or be willing to clean up any overspray later.

The engine block was hot-tanked just last week so there is no worry as far as the block being dirty or anything. I would have to clean the Head and Valve cover however. But that would be pretty easy to do. I just discovered thos wire brush heads for drills. Man those things can really clean things up.

Leaves it all nice and shiny. I actually used a small wire brush on the end of my drill to clean off the inside of the cylinder heads. Now they are all nice and shiny. Clean too.

wipe down the surfaces to be painted with alcohol or acetone; leave no grease or oil on the surface
