4.63 gear into a Gen 2.5
      #1268255 - 08/22/12 10:48 PM

I swapped a 1996 SR pumpkin with the locker and 4.63 gears into my GrassCat (1998) with no problems. Easy bolt up. The Cat had a locker to begin with.

Carlos (cap510) help me swap out the front end with little problems, but we did discover some difference in the two.

The Gen 2.5 axles are a bit smaller in diameter and the flange on the passenger side will not bolt up to the Gen 2 shaft coming out of the front pumpkin.

The fix was to use my Gen 2.5 shaft. They are the same except the bolt pattern.

While we were at it we serviced the CV joints installed new boots, installed new tie-rod ends, new upper and lower ball joints, new brake pads and called it a day as I was dragging my butt around by a string.

Thanks a bunch Carlos. Now you know why I call him my younger Son.

I think you mean 4.63 gears, the 4.62's are LP front and 8"-9" rear.

How's the power difference?

Great timing on the post, as there is an SR at the Pull-A-Part with only 115k on it, and clean looking underneath, especially for this way.

So you swapped the front center housing as well, or just the carrier assembly? Sounds like the former. I was wondering if I should pull the CVs from the SR when I go. Sounds like I don't need to, just use the 2.5s fixed shaft on the PS side?

I'll be swapping full rear axle as mine is 00 and no locker.

Lastly, what Toasty asked... Between the gears and the 32s, and then the lack of a stick, I am not loving the way my 00 drives at times.

Fixed it, can't tell much difference in it yet. Have to put some more miles on it.

Bill
I swapped the front pumpkin along with the fixed shaft housing and used my Gen 2.5 shaft.

And when you say the Gen 2.5 axles are smaller diameter, you're talking about the CVs there? If so, I wonder it maybe I'll grab the Gen 2s since they are cheap at the U-Pull.

Why not? They are bigger by a little and you won't have to swap the shaft.

Kind of what I'm thinking. Plus I can then take my time with the install. Have the CVs regreased and new boots for preventative measures. Have to see if I can get to the yard this weekend. And if I get really ambitious, there is a 2000 Sport next to it with 4.9s (no locker on it though)...
