I already tried using a full winch cover to protect it from the elements but because the clearance is too tight, it ends up rubbing against the front metal that's underneath the grill. It's already rubbed part way through the paint so I was looking for alternatives and found this instead...
Is this winch spool cover a good idea (versus a cover for the entire winch)?
Anyone use this one before or have opinions on it? Haven't seen much about this online so I'm assuming it's not necessary but figured I ought to ask...

Don't be penny wise and pound foolish! You've just spent over $100 on that new synthetic winch rope. Why not spend the lousey $14 to protect it?
You will enjoy a winch line cover, because it will protect your investment ( synthetic line ) and keep your winch line cleaner and lasting longer. It would be a shame to have to buy a new winch line every year because the UV rays damaged it prematurely or the grit/dirt/mud acted like sand paper and wore it out before it should have. Abraison and UV rays are the culprits here. I've seen where winch line manufactures recommend cleaning the line with a mild soap and water and keeping the line out of the sun for maxium longevity. Good advice and goes along with why we offer this cover to you. Take comfort in knowing that your winch line will last much longer. Works with most winches, Warn, Superwinch, Ramsey, Mile Marker. A minimum width of 8.5" inside to inside. That's most winches that will be bolted on to a Jeep, Toyota, Land Rover, and Bronco. Will not fit Warn 9.0Rc, or Ramsey Triple-X6000 or any the short drum units. Can be used with steel cable lines also, if you’re looking to keep the mud, grime, and other items found on the trail out of your line. Keep the muck out. Impervious to harmful UV rays. Covers are made from a H.D. laminated vinyl that has a fiberglass scrim backing. The scrim offer superior strength and durability. Easy installation and removal. Uses hook and loop/Velcro strips. Due to different rope diameter, can be cut for custom fit. Easy to clean. Good news is you get chose from 3 different colors. Offered in Gray (pictured), Blue or a bright Yellow. Made in the USA.

Spend the lousey $14, I'm sure it's better than no cover.
