Been seeing more and more shift from the older 15" dia. rims to larger dia. rim sizes (16, 17, 18", etc.). If I were buying a rim today, what size should I be looking at for the widest and most cost effective selection of available off road (at and/or mt) tires?

I'd think 16-17 X 7 would be your best bet for ease of finding tires.

16's have limited tire sizes, 17's are gaining popularity but still have a ways to come with wheel options, both have more expensive tires.
15's still seem to have a good tire and wheel selection.

I'd stick with 15x8 or 15x10 if you are wanting 35's; good selection for the foreseeable future. Technically, an 8" wide rim is a half inch too narrow for a 35/12.5x15, but it does work (BFG recommended width min is 8.5", but where do you find those?).

Most of my "eight" inch aluminum rims measure 8.5 inches wide between the inside beads.

Thanks! I've been doing some prelim research online... Is it me or are the same dia. tires (33" equivalent) for larger rims significantly more expensive.

. Yes by quite a lot. Looking to get 16s myself so I can run 235/85's. But in 33's and larger they get very expensive.

More money less rubber with the bigger wheels, the exceptions are 16.5's and 20's.
16.5" wheels = cheap 37" tires 20" wheels =cheap 40-53" tires

Not yet ready for 37's+ and <35" tires are expensive on bigger rims so will stick with 15" rims for now.

good and timely thread, Ray. I've alway have this question in the back of my small brain. I've got 2 totally bald rear tires. I checked last week with my local friendly used tire dealer and he said he was not finding many 15" used tires these days. I'm just looking to stay in the same size range of tire and am still conciderin picking up some Tacoma 16" steelies so I can find affordable tires.
