I don't know exactly what you would need to do to swap in an auto tranny. But I suspect it would be less-complicated than going from auto to manual. The auto has a shift position sensor for the starting circuit that serves the same safety function as the manual's clutch position sensor. I'm not sure if the wiring harness on your vehicle has both connectors or if the switches use the same type of connector. I think both sensors are located in the same area (right side of trans/bell housing) and tie into the same leg of the circuit (on the '97, at least).

I don't think the ECUs differ between auto and manual. I had to replace my ECU/ECM recently and there was no application difference between the two trannies, or 4x4 vs 2wd, for that matter.

Of course, there will be the changing of the shift hardware and capping off the clutch-related systems. But I think that would be easier than trying to install them on a native auto trans configuration.

So let's start a list...

- Remove trans & flywheel. Install flex plate(?) and torque converter.

- Remove manual shifter. Install auto shift lever and linkage.

- Replace instrument panel? (P, D, N, R)

- Disable/remove clutch system.

- Sort out all of the ECU-related connections.

- Expand your four-letter vocabulary...

I'm sure others would be happy to chime in...

Would it not be easier and cheaper to sell you current manual and purchase a automatic Sporty?

They are not an overly expensive vehicle and I think perhaps you would over capitilse doing the conversion unless you can get the parts required for practically nothing.

Food for thought perhaps?

Cheers, Chris

ECU's are different, I have a 2000 Auto 4x4 ECU that is 50 state legal laying around somewhere.
If I find it I'll post a pic.
